As many watch the presidential race fall into a bitter battle of verbal accusations, the Republican Party has made the move to increase the battle on national television.The party recently made a decision to bulk up its advertising budget in 17 states, including Michigan, where the GOP feels the need to combat Democratic television ads and get its message to the public.Along with the increased spending, the party is unveiling a new line of commercials designed by the Republican National Committee.

E.L. rearranges budget to benefit local parks

The East Lansing City Council approved changes to the $50 million city budget late Tuesday night that will include more money for parks and recreational facilities. Residents will reap the benefits of the budget change by enjoying park improvements in such parks as Harrison Meadows Park and the East Lansing Soccer Complex.

Olympiad makes science fun for kids

Children in the tri-county area will get a chance to experience science hands-on Nov. 4 at the Elementary Science Olympiad, hosted by Lansing Community College. Unlike Science Olympiad competitions for children in older grades, the event isn’t competitive but just a chance for students to learn more about science, said Mary Brown, a biology professor at LCC and a Science Olympiad co-director at the college. “It’s an opportunity to get kids involved in science,” she said.

Star plans to visit Madison college

Richard Dreyfuss will take “baby steps” to Case Hall on Thursday as part of the “Mr. Holland’s Opus Education” tour. Dreyfuss, the star of the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” will visit schools in the Lansing area Thursday in support of political activism, said Norman Graham, associate dean of James Madison College. The Oscar-winning actor will visit Lansing’s Waverly High School, 5207 W.

Student stabbed twice at off-campus party

A 22-year-old East Lansing resident was stabbed while attempting to break up a fight early Sunday morning.Eric Miller, a criminal justice and psychology senior, was stabbed twice in the back by an unidentified male at a party inside a private residence on the 100 block of Gunson Street around 1:15 a.m., said East Lansing police Capt.

Council to consider transportation merger

The East Lansing City Council will meet tonight to discuss Capital Area Rail Council merging with the Capital Area Transportation Authority. The Rail Council is a group of representatives from the Greater Lansing area who oversee the Amtrak station in East Lansing.

LANSING - Multiply 110 lawmakers by two large boxes of paper a day, and you have a ton of paper.To reduce the amount of paper used, and the associated costs, the Michigan House of Representatives came up with a solution and implemented it with the opening of the fall session in late September.Each representative’s desk on the House floor is now complete with a $2,900 WinBook Pentium III laptop computer.The 110 computers cost nearly $320,000 - and that doesn’t include labor costs and installation fees.

Races benefit center

LANSING - Combining fitness, science and fun, more than 500 people raced to benefit a Lansing museum that reopened its doors Sunday with the eighth annual Capital City River Run and Planet Walk. The two runs, a 10-mile and a 5K, both began in the parking lot of the Impression Five Science Center, 200 Museum Drive, and ran along the River Trail in downtown Lansing. There was also a Planet Walk - a nearly two-mile hike which illustrated a scale model of the solar system - along the River Trail, ending in Potter Park Zoo.

Family offers reward for E.L. beating information

The family of a man severely beaten outside of an East Lansing eatery is offering a $500 reward for information about their son’s attacker. Brandon D’Annunzio, a 24-year-old Livonia resident, is in stable but critical condition at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital.

Voter registration deadline close

Time is running out for students who haven’t registered to vote and wish to take part in this year’s presidential election. Secretary of state branch offices are accepting voter registration through Tuesday at all 178 secretary of state offices across Michigan. “We’re there to do business and anyone who comes into the office on Tuesday to register to vote, we’ll accommodate them,” said Liz Boyd, spokeswoman for the secretary of state. Students can also register at the local city clerk’s office or by mail if the letter is postmarked by midnight Tuesday. Boyd said it’s not unusual for students to wait until the last minute to register.
