Lansing AIDS walk brings awareness, donations

Tim Barron remembers when HIV and AIDS didn’t have names. The Lansing Radio DJ said he knew friends who contracted the disease, saw the early stages of its research and publicity and now is doing his part to help. Barron, a radio DJ for WQTX (92.1), emceed the Lansing Area AIDS Network’s, or LAAN, AIDS Walk Lansing/East Lansing 2010 Sunday, starting at Valley Court Park, 400 Hillside Court, circling around the Bailey Neighborhood and ending back at the park. The festivities began at Valley Court Park, with tents set up for participants and corporate sponsors for those registering.

Recycle-Rama takes in large haul Saturday

About 20,000 pounds of scrap metal, 200 gallons of grease and oil, a truckload of clothes, 2.5 tons of appliances and other items were gathered at Recycle-Rama on Saturday at the Ingham County Health Department. Recycle-Rama offered free disposal of items such as TVs, refrigerators and other goods that usually cost money to recycle.

Snyder, Bernero to debate in Wixom

A one-on-one coffee meeting in Lansing on Wednesday between the gubernatorial candidates secured what five weeks of meetings between their lawyers could not — an agreement to a debate. Republican gubernatorial candidate and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder and Democratic candidate and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero will debate at 7 p.m.

Triplett recieves humanity award

When East Lansing City Councilmember Nathan Triplett was bullied as a high school student in Portage, Mich., it started a fire in him to fight against bullies across the state. Triplett was assaulted with a textbook in his high school’s locker room, knocking him unconscious. “The school’s response was ‘Boys will be boys’,” he said.

Senate votes not to discuss bill

The U.S. Senate voted Tuesday not to open debate on military spending authorization bill that included amendments on the controversial DREAM Act and “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal. In order to reach discussion, and thereby a final vote, the Senate required 60 favorable votes, a three-fifths majority.

New poll shows Snyder leads Bernero

In addition to his Republican status, gubernatorial candidate and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder garners support from his experience in business, according to a recent poll. Thanks in part to his executive background, almost twice as many people plan to vote for Snyder as for Democratic Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in the gubernatorial elections Nov.

Victoria's Secret previews MSU PINK on campus

Christmas came early for some MSU students as they caught a sneak peek at some of Victoria’s secrets on Monday. Victoria’s Secret PINK kicked off its annual college campus tour at the Harrison Roadhouse, 720 Michigan Ave., and offered items from its holiday line, including MSU PINK apparel before it hits stores.

New bill allows LCC to offer bachelor degrees

Lansing Community College could open a bachelor of science in nursing program only five miles from MSU’s College of Nursing if a bill passed by the Michigan House of Representatives Thursday is passed into law. In a vote scrambled across party lines, both pieces of the two-bill package passed by a narrow margin — 55-49 and 55-48, respectively.

Atty. general candidates continue campaign

Both candidates campaigning to become the next attorney general pledge to create safer streets in the state. In the Nov. 2 general election, voters will decide which man has the better plan. Democrat David Leyton will face Republican Bill Schuette in a race to replace term-limited attorney general and ex-GOP gubernatorial hopeful Mike Cox.

Group invites students, E. L. to help in post-game cleanup

Football Saturdays are known for tailgating, rowdiness and the thrill of the game, but the Sundays after can leave the streets of East Lansing strewn with trash. MSU’s Community Relations Coalition, or CRC, will be on hand Sunday to clean-up after MSU’s Saturday football game against Notre Dame. CRC is encouraging East Lansing residents ­— both students and long-term residents ­— to pitch in at 10:30 a.m.

After two years of operating in East Lansing, Snap Fitness has proven to be fit for business. Snap Fitness, located at 115 E. Grand River Ave., opened its doors during a time of economic recession. Many businesses felt the repercussions of a sluggish economy.
