Reporter responds to column criticism

Hopefully, at least some of you read my column in Friday’s paper. If not, well, please don’t go ahead and look back. This is more in response to some of the backlash that centered around the misuse of one word.

In my column, I stated, “Many people at this university probably once aspired to don the maize and blue.” A simple enough observation, as we probably all have friends in East Lansing who rooted for Michigan up until they got to college. What complicated the issue, though, is the word “many.”

I intended to use “many” as it is defined, which is being in a large quantity or numerous amount. Unfortunately, for myself, the word was misconstrued to mean “most” or “all,” as many readers indicated in their comments at www.statenews.com.
