Welcome to a new era

August 27, 2007

All the reporters and team personnel present at MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio’s Monday press conference could tell this was a new era for Spartan men’s golf.

Wait, what?

Dantonio isn’t the only new coach to don the green and white this year, as he began his press conference by introducing men’s golf head coach Sam Puryear. After Puryear, who previously served as an assistant coach at Stanford University, was asked to pronounce his name (pur-YEER) and finished his address, Dantonio remarked “Now he only needs to get one Big Ten Championship per year.”

Laughter ensued.

Well, wouldn’t it be nice if we could make such a statement about Dantonio?

Yes, we all are anticipating widespread changes and a 720 degree turnaround (the standard 360 isn’t nearly enough), but is that reasonable? Even Dantonio admitted fans need to be somewhat patient – this ship isn’t about to sink, but the waters might rock it every now and then.

The Spartan faithful are investing a lot in Dantonio, and from his press conferences and what the players have been saying, it’s a sound investment. But this is going to take time. There is no get-rich-quick scheme.

Patience is a virtue, Spartan fans. Practice it.
