Icers fall to Ferris State in overtime
For more than 60 minutes, the MSU hockey team answered everything a fast No. 20 Ferris State team threw at it. But with 1:06 remaining in overtime, Ferris State defenseman Chad Billins’ deflected goal lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 overtime victory.

Spartans blow by Bowling Green, 74-39
The No. 6 MSU men’s basketball team defeated Bowling Green, 74-39, on Saturday at Breslin Center. Junior guard Kalin Lucas sat himself out for most of the second half to due tiredness and soreness.

Head coach Tom Minkel has the MSU wrestling team ready to open its Big Ten season on the road this weekend, and while some teams might be worried, Minkel said he’s embracing the conference opener against three-time defending national champion and No. 7 Iowa.

Wednesday night’s game against Duke, which many believe could be a preview of the national championship game, saw MSU turn the ball over 20 times. If there’s one thing the Spartans are looking to improve on when Bowling Green comes to town Saturday, it’s taking better care of the ball.

Sitting near the bottom of the CCHA standings with a 2-6-1 conference record, the MSU hockey team knows it is capable of more. This weekend MSU will play a home-and-home with No. 20 Ferris State.

Spartans earn Academic All-Big Ten honors
The Big Ten awarded 706 fall student-athletes for excelling on the field and in the classroom with 2010 Academic All-Conference honors. The conference office announced 83 of the awards went to student-athletes in seven fall sports for MSU, which was second most in the conference behind only Northwestern.

In the most anticipated matchup of the 2010 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the No. 6 MSU men’s basketball team lost to No. 1 Duke, 84-79 Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

In their second trip to the Sunshine State in one week, the No. 25 MSU women’s basketball team defeated No. 15 Florida State, 72-64, led by an almost-triple-double from junior forward Lykendra Johnson.

Tough season ends on high note for volleyball team
attling injuries, adversity and Big Ten competition, MSU volleyball head coach Cathy George was faced with more challenges than she could imagine. After falling into a six-match losing streak, the Spartans (15-16 overall, 7-13 Big Ten) pulled themselves up by their shoelaces and finished the season 4-2.

As the only honoree from the MSU volleyball team, junior outside hitter and middle blocker Jenilee Rathje was named to the 2010 All-Big Ten Team, the conference announced Tuesday.

Three months ago, before the college football season had even started, MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio played a game of “repeat after me” with his football team.
