Spartans test the ice

A persistent drizzle Friday night forced Michigan to cancel its only scheduled outdoor practice before “The Cold War” and take shelter inside Munn Ice Arena.But the host Spartans braved the elements and skated on the portable rink inside Spartan Stadium for about 30 minutes Friday.

Cornerback out 8-10 weeks

Redshirt freshman cornerback Jason Harmon broke his right ankle in practice Wednesday and will be out for eight to 10 weeks, MSU Assistant Athletics Director John Lewandowski said. Harmon was participating in seven-on-seven drills and landed on his foot awkwardly. “He planted his foot, and it just broke,” Lewandowski said.

Melting ice slows Cold War preparations as planners await cooler weather

Perhaps nobody is looking forward to the expected drop in Lansing area temperatures more than Al Osterloh. Osterloh owns Los Tres Papagayos, the company contracted to ready Spartan Stadium for “The Cold War” hockey game Saturday night - and Wednesday’s sunny, warm weather was giving him cold feet. The rink had some solid ice Wednesday afternoon, but it was submerged in a fair amount of standing water.

Icers take spectacle seriously

The spectacle surrounding “The Cold War” worries MSU head coach Ron Mason more than anything the Michigan Wolverines are going to throw at his team Saturday. Mason has to make his players look past the daylong tailgate that could take over campus, ignore the scheduled laser light shows and mini-country concerts accompanying the game and somehow forget about the world-record crowd of more than 72,000 expected to jam Spartan Stadium for the 7:05 p.m.

Womens golf moves in poll

After finishing fifth at its first tournament, the Spartan women’s golf team jumped to No. 7 up in the Sagarin Golfweek.com rankings.Fellow Big Ten team Ohio State is No.1 in the poll, and Vanderbilt, Auburn, Texas and Tulsa round out the top five.MSU is 19-4-0 on the season.Two Spartans, senior Emily Bastel (11th) and sophomore Allison Fouch (13th) cracked the Golfweek.com’s top 15 individual rankings.

Cold War work crew begins transforming Spartan Stadium

Crews have been working through the night transforming Spartan Stadium from a gridiron showroom to a hockey shrine for “The Cold War,” and Associate Athletics Director Mark Hollis said the conversion is ahead of schedule. “Everything is going very smooth, just as planned,” Hollis said.

Field hockey takes close one against Cornell, 4-3

The No. 6 MSU women’s field hockey team rallied late to defeat Cornell 4-3, tallying its fourth consecutive victory at Penn State on Sunday. Freshman back Judith van Haeringen scored two goals in the match, including the game winner.

Offense nails 15 goals in weekend exhibition games

Let the countdown to “The Cold War” officially begin.The Spartans breezed through two exhibition games this weekend - a 1-0 Green and White intrasquad scrimmage Friday and a 14-1 rout of Queen’s University (Ontario) on Saturday - in their only tune-ups leading up to the season-opening contest against Michigan at 7:05 p.m.

Kickers land first Big Ten win

After a disappointing start to its Big Ten season, the MSU women’s soccer team found its first conference win of the season against Northwestern on Sunday at Old College Field. A crowd of 375 watched as the Spartans (4-3-2, 1-2-1 Big Ten) battled to a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats. The win raised the spirits of the Spartans, who had had dismal showings in the Big Ten so far this season. “Had we not come out of here with three points today, we’d really have a big hole to dig out of,” head coach Tom Saxton said. Northwestern (2-5-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) put the pressure on early, but the Spartans refused to let the team score while they waited for their chance. “If you’re defending for a while, you just can’t freak out,” Saxton said.

Caldemeyer grabs 2 titles for Spartans

If there was one star on the Spartan women’s tennis team that shined above the rest this weekend, it was freshman Mandy Caldemeyer. Caldemeyer won two tennis titles at the Spartan Cup this weekend at the MSU tennis courts. She defeated freshman Jehan Patel for the singles B Flight Championship, 6-2, 6-1.

Field goal ends roller-coaster game in Spartan loss

Evanston, Ill. - It was a game that will be remembered as an instant classic. In MSU’s 27-26 loss to Northwestern on Saturday, the lead changed three times in the final 28 seconds, taking the Spartans on the most frantic ride many players said they’d ever ridden. “Emotions went both ways,” sophomore wide receiver Charles Rogers said.
