Dortchs broken leg shuts him down for season

Madison, Wis. - The MSU football team rallied behind another fallen Spartan soldier Saturday as it beat Wisconsin 42-28 at Camp Randall Stadium. A season-ending injury stung sophomore cornerback Tyrell Dortch when he broke his leg in the second quarter. After doctors reset his leg in the field, Dortch was taken to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where he underwent surgery.

Spartans keep winning by sweeping Purdue 3-0

The Spartans rallied from a late four-point deficit in game three against Purdue to close out the Boilermakers in a 3-0 sweep at Jenison Field House on Friday.The Spartans (13-6, 6-6 Big Ten) dominated games one and two before Purdue (3-17, 1-11) grabbed its first clear control of the match in game three.But MSU rallied from trailing 27-23, to run five straight off the Boilermakers, and downed them 32-30.“We were a little flat in the third game, but I thought Purdue really raised their game and played hard,” Spartan head coach Chuck Erbe said.

McCallie confident in youth

Chicago - In her second season, MSU women’s head basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie is running into a similar roster situation as MSU men’s head basketball coach Tom Izzo. Youth, and lots of it. And McCallie is taking a similar approach. “We’re very excited (about this season),” McCallie said at Sunday’s Big Ten Conference Basketball Media Day.

Team refuels with shutout over Broncos

After Sunday’s 1-0 loss in double overtime to Penn State, the MSU men’s soccer team dropped down to at least third in the Big Ten. But the Spartans proved they could still compete with a 4-0 win against Western Michigan on Wednesday at Old College Field. The Spartans (9-3-1, 3-2 Big Ten) controlled the game from the start, but could not get the ball into the net. Junior forward Brett Konley fired three shots without nailing a goal before the Spartans were able to score. “We were scared our offense wasn’t going to come out that well,” sophomore forward Thomas Trivelloni said.

New offensive approach bringing results

It’s not an uncommon hockey strategy, but it seems to have penetrated the top-ranked Spartans’ consciousness more than usual in the early stages of this season. “Just get the puck to the net and see what happens,” junior left wing Brian Maloney repeated again and again after practice Monday. The Spartans won’t call it their season motto, but it’s close.

Keith named rookie of the week

The CCHA named freshman defenseman Duncan Keith the league’s Rookie of the Week for his two-assist effort against Ferris State on Saturday. Keith, from Penticton, British Columbia, is tied for the team lead with six points this season.
