Men's soccer defeats Oakland to advance to Sweet Sixteen

The men’s soccer team (12-4-5 overall, 4-2-2 Big Ten) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen by defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (10-7-3 overall, 5-0-3 Horizon) 1-0min the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon. This was the second time this season the Spartans played the Golden Grizzlies this season, this time avenging their 2-0 loss on Oct. 22 during the regular season.

Late run helps women's basketball pull off 64-45 win over IUPUI

After an emotional loss to No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 15 MSU was back in action at Breslin Center taking on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Jaguars. MSU looked sluggish at times but was able to pull out a 64-45 win after a 20-9 run to end the game.

Cathy George picked up 550th career win against Rutgers Saturday

Volleyball head coach Cathy George won her 550th game in impressive fashion Saturday night. MSU (16-13 overall, 9-9 Big Ten) swept Rutgers (7-24 overall, 0-18 Big Ten), 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-16) at Jenison Field House.

Head coach Mark Dantonio made it fun for MSU Saturday with some unconventional play calling that led to a number of smiles following the 45-3 victory over Rutgers in the Spartans’ final home game of the season.

The hockey team (4-7-0 overall, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten) was defeated 3-0 Friday night by the Ohio State Buckeyes (4-7-1 overall, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten). After defeating the Buckeyes 2-1 the previous night, the Spartans couldn’t muster up any goals on Friday.

Men's basketball returns home, defeats Loyola Chicago 87-52

The No. 19 men's basketball team bounced back from a 10-point loss against No. 4 Duke on Tuesday with an 87-52 home victory over Loyola Chicago Friday night.  Five Spartans reached double figure, led by senior forward Branden Dawson who had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and freshman forward Marvin Clark Jr.

Last Friday, the women’s cross country team added the Great Lakes Regional title to their season accomplishments. The men’s team finished second behind Wisconsin. Both teams automatically qualified for the NCAA Nationals, which will take place Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana.

When assigned this column, I was troubled on what would be the best thing to focus on when addressing Tom Izzo. The subject could range anywhere from his great achievements on the court to what he’s done for this university to even what he’s done for this whole state of Michigan in general. The possibilities were endless and I was somewhat overwhelmed. I mean, we are talking about a man who has achieved so much here at MSU and across the state during the past 20 years.
