Avoiding a letdown

After watching film of MSU’s nail-biting loss to Wisconsin last Saturday, junior quarterback Brian Hoyer couldn’t help but replay the game in his head while he tried to drift off to sleep. There was one play he wished he could take back. One play that could have been the difference between being patted on the back for a valiant effort or being celebrated as victors when they returned to MSU’s campus late Saturday night.

Students lobby for new game cheer

The student section might sound a little different at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. A grassroots campaign spearheaded by political theory and constitutional democracy sophomore Jason Leva and other members of Spartantailgate.com Red Cedar Message Board are trying to start a new cheer based on the team’s mantra: “Pound Green, Pound.”

Comley eager to begin year, defend title

Coming off the program’s first national title in 21 years, MSU head coach Rick Comley said he’s more driven now than he’s ever been. “That’s the feeling I have sitting here, right now,” Comley said Tuesday at MSU Media Day. “These are golden years for me … it’s such a great school and a great program, there’s so much pride taken from winning a national championship, I’m just hungry to do it again.”

MSU excels at invite

To put it lightly, it was a pretty good weekend for the MSU women’s tennis team. At the Spartan Invitational held this weekend at the Wilson tennis courts, the Spartans routed their competition, going 30-1 in singles matches and 11-2 in doubles.

Fans: Spartan team is not like last year

Madison, Wis. — The real MSU finally showed up Saturday as the Spartans lost 37-34 at Wisconsin. We finally know this team can compete with the best. We finally have a reason to be excited and inspired.

A standing ovation from opposing fans, a legitimate congratulatory video message from the previous record holder and a grizzled veteran running around like a rookie. If only all hallowed records could fall like that.

Madison, Wis. — After sitting out a majority of the past three games injured, senior safety Nehemiah Warrick could not wait to smash pads with an opponent again. Wisconsin wide receiver Kyle Jefferson felt the brunt of that on Saturday.

Wisconsin athletics was celebrating both at home and in East Lansing on Saturday. The MSU volleyball team (9-7 overall, 0-4 Big Ten) felt the same pain in East Lansing as the MSU football team did in Madison.

The State News recently caught up with Spartans football legend Carl Banks to discuss where MSU football has been and where it is going. Banks played as a linebacker at MSU from 1980-83 and became the first non-kicker at MSU to receive first team All-Big Ten honors three consecutive seasons.
