Smith Center celebrates 10th anniversary

For former MSU men’s basketball player Steve Smith, 10 years has flown by since the opening of the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center in 1998. In 1997, Smith donated $2.5 million for the construction of a facility that would serve as both an academic center and gathering space for student-athletes — the largest single donation ever made by a professional athlete to an alma mater.

Spartans come back to win Fossum

The No. 24 MSU women’s golf team came back from five strokes down Sunday to upset No. 19 Kent State and win the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans — who shot 25 over par and trailed Kent State, 20 over par, and Notre Dame, 24 over par, after 36 holes — won by the slimmest of margins, requiring two tiebreakers to prevail.

Ringer's big game spurs MSU to victory

After the MSU football team defeated Notre Dame 23-7 on Saturday, the trailer behind the north endzone of Spartan Stadium where postgame interviews are held started filling up. One by one, members of MSU’s offensive line took the stage before senior running back Javon Ringer finally entered and stood at the podium. “Like I said before, I can do nothing without these guys standing next to me,” said Ringer, who rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries. “It was a great team win and we were very, very dominant up front on both sides of the ball.”

Women's soccer wins 3-0 against Kent State

A weekend full of downpours couldn’t stop the Spartans’ season-long dominance. The MSU women’s soccer team’s patience and willingness to stick it out in the pouring rain and standing water on the field allowed them to enter the Green and White record books — posting their seventh straight victory in a 3-0 win to Kent State on Sunday at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field, the best start in school history.

MSU prepares for league play

Coming into this weekend’s first Big Ten game at Ohio State, the men’s soccer team is 2-3. All three losses have come to teams who made the NCAA Tournament last year. So unlike football or basketball, the soccer schedule doesn’t have any gimmick games. Here’s how the team looks heading into conference play.

Unger anchors stout defensive corps

Preaching team defense all season, the No. 10 MSU field hockey team has shown it on the field. Leading the charge is junior goalkeeper Elissa Unger, who received Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors this week for her play in last weekend’s games against then-No. 18 Boston University and New Hampshire.

MSU volleyball overcomes threat from Oakland

The MSU volleyball team struggled to extend its winning streak Tuesday night with a 3-1 defeat of Oakland. After a slow start, the team dominated the first set, rallying from a 7-7 tie early on to win the set 25-15.
