University struggles to keep Broad museum under budget, on time

Winter is beginning to give way to warmth, but progress on MSU’s new art museum — which was set to break ground this spring — remains frozen. At the time of its announcement last January, projected cost for the building was about $40 million. However, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said last week initial outside estimates for the entire project were about $160 million — or roughly four times the original projected cost.

Arrest made in sexual assaults

A 28-year-old Lansing man faces up to 15 years in prison for two counts of sexual assault related to incidents that occurred within about an hour of each other on and near campus last week.

An 18-year-old student made the mistake of leaving his personal belongings on a bench in Munn Ice Arena’s locker room Tuesday, and it ended up costing him $80, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Spring greening

As the threat of global climate change becomes more real, local efforts to reduce waste are more important than ever. At MSU, campus officials have set a goal to decrease waste by 30 percent by 2015. And in East Lansing, recycling coordinators have seen an increased effort by students to reuse materials and clean up after themselves.

Troy Brake found guilty of unrelated crime

The lead suspect in a quadruple homicide involving an MSU student was found guilty today in Kent County Circuit Court for an unrelated crime, according to media reports. Troy Brake, 31, of Grand Rapids, was found guilty of attempted murder, criminal sexual conduct and felony use of firearms in relation to the beating of a prostitute on Oct. 16, 2008 in Grand Rapids.
