Young generation favors hybrid cars
A recent study released by Deloitte and a professor from MSU’s Eli Broad College of Business shows Generation Y prefers hybrid and electric cars to traditional gasoline-only vehicles. The survey was given to 1,500 Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boomer consumers in the U.S., 250 Gen Y consumers in China and 300 Gen Y consumers in Western Europe.

Lawsuit filed against city council for alleged secret meeting
The city of East Lansing is filing a motion to dismiss a lawsuit accusing the city council and the city attorney of violating a law mandating all public voting bodies hold open meetings to discuss practices and votes. The lawsuit alleges the city council violated the Open Meetings Act, or OMA, and made a decision in secret. The lawsuit was filed Jan. 9 in Ingham County’s 30th Circuit Court by Phil Bellfy, an MSU associate professor of writing, rhetoric and American cultures, and his lawyer, East Lansing attorney Jeffrey Hank.

Tax refunds available until this afternoon

Nonresident applications to MSU increase
MSU’s admission rate is consistent compared to last year, but the university’s applicant pool is seeing more and more students from outside of Michigan added to the mix. Director of admissions Jim Cotter said MSU has seen an increase in nonresident applicants. MSU has received about 27,000 applications so far for the 2012-13 academic year, a 5.5 percent increase compared to applications received in fall 2010, Cotter said.

Community celebrates birthday of Scotsman Robert Burns
Bagpipes, haggis, highland dancers and more than 450 people dressed in kilts and caps joined in the annual celebration of Scottish poet Robert Burns’ 253rd birthday last Saturday night. Equestrian team prepares for western semifinals
Members of the MSU Stock Seat Equestrian Team are focused on their preparation this semester before they saddle up to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete for a shot to ride at the national stage. The 24-member team qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, or IHSA, Western Semifinals at Florida State University, which run March 24-25, by notching a one-point victory over rival Grand Valley State University on Jan.
