Anime enthusiasts gather for Shuto Con

Theresa Ford grabbed a life-sized sling shot in the hopes of knocking over Angry Birds plush stuffed animals stacked on a tower of cardboard boxes Sunday afternoon. The computer engineering sophomore was among hundreds of anime enthusiasts who gathered for the Shuto Con Anime Convention at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave. The convention was held Friday through Sunday with various activities including gaming rooms, dodgeball tournaments and a life-sized version of the popular app Angry Birds.

Indian culture highlighted by Satrang at Auditorium

As East-meets-West mixtures of American and Indian music filled the Auditorium on Friday evening, many students couldn’t help but bob their heads and tap their feet to the powerful beats of Satrang 2012: Afsana. About 500 students, friends and families attended the Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students’, or CIUS, annual show to celebrate the multiple facets of Indian culture.

Warmer temperatures help bring more business to MSU

At the end of March last year, MSU was preparing for another snowfall, and students were bundling up in coats and boots to walk across campus. But this year, the warmer weather is kicking off what could be one of the busiest seasons for campus organizations in the past five years and giving students sunny days to look forward to.

In high school, while sitting in foods class, MSU alumna Lauren Long found out about an opening at a bridal salon called the Wedding Bell. She jumped at the chance to take the job, and she’s been consulting brides ever since. “It’s always a happy time for people, and I think that feeling is contagious,” said Long, an Okemos resident.

Possible E.L. budget cuts might affect future police, fire services

The East Lansing City Council is again discussing potential budget issues that could cut police and fire services, which might hurt the departments’ ability to deal with large events, such as future March Madness celebrations. During their Tuesday night work session at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, council members discussed removing eight full-time police positions, including five patrol officers, two detectives and one school officer to maintain a lower budget in the 2013-14 fiscal year.

Capsule app aims to make party planning private

A new smartphone application named Capsule is getting some attention among young adults because of its innovative way of party planning and sharing. The app launched Jan. 19 and provides users with a way to invite specific friends to an event without having it publicly displayed on Facebook or other social media sites. A specific phone number and email address is selected for the Capsule group so personal information can be anonymous.

The first thing New York Times Washington Correspondent Sheryl Stolberg did when she took the stage in the Kellogg Center Auditorium on Wednesday night was show everyone how to ride a hovercraft. Pulling up a video, she shared her experience touring a factory with President Barack Obama, who personally called her out to ride a hovercraft in front of other members of the press.

Students rally for nurse rights

“Protect our jobs! Protect our voice!” and similar chants filled Michigan Avenue in Lansing Wednesday as close to 500 registered nurses, students and activists from across Michigan flooded the streets with signs and flags. “I think with health care really being in the forefront of politics today and nurses being the most trusted profession in the country, we can make a difference,” said Debra Nault, a registered nurse and clinical faculty member at MSU. RHA presents country singer Easton Corbin

When marketing sophomore Nick Kurtenbach saw country music singer Easton Corbin in concert two years ago, he wasn’t familiar with the musician, who was the opening act at the show. But the rising star’s performance stuck with Kurtenbach, and when he heard Corbin would be performing at MSU next week, he couldn’t pass it up.
