U business team wins national contest

A group of four MSU business students were deemed the best graduate student team to solve accounting scandals and manipulations similar to ones that led to the downfalls of companies like Enron and WorldCom.The students returned from Nashville, Tenn., Sunday with $12,000 to split between the members and a National Black MBA Case Competition first place trophy in hand.The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management team includes graduate students Tasha McCarter, Rose Nyatanga, Donald Bryant and graduate student Arica Drummond.

RHA officer quits to pursue goals

For the second time this month, the Residence Halls Association is losing a member of its executive board.History junior Charles Russman announced his decision to withdraw from the position of director of public relations and advertising Monday to RHA president Tim Liss.The resignation will become official on Friday, but RHA officials will open up the position tonight at the organization’s general assembly meeting.Russman said being in RHA was no longer a top priority for him.“I want to put more time and effort in school work and being a mentor,” he said.“I just don’t have enough time to take 20 credits, be a mentor and continue to do a good job at the position.”Russman handled RHA’s publicity and advertising and was the media contact and official spokesman for the organization.

Workshops offered about kids, parents

Free workshops for the Parenting Education Series begin today with a seminar called “The ABC’s of Discipline at Work.” MSU Child and Family Care Resources program and the Women’s Resource Center sponsored the series. The two-part workshop will be presented by Paul Van Kleek, from the office of Program and Professional Services.

U Museum receives merit award

The MSU Museum will be honored with a prestigious award this weekend. The museum’s “The FairTime Project,” which began in 1995, will receive an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History on Friday.

MSU’s undergraduate student government is still working out the kinks of having new representatives in its assemblies - something that happens every year, ASMSU officials said.ASMSU Student Assembly vice-chairperson for internal affairs Missy Kushlak presented a short lesson on the basics of Robert’s Rules of Order at the first assembly meeting of the year for new representatives.

Students interested in being the next George W. Bush or Al Gore might be interested in one of the newest classes offered at MSU - Political Science 392: Career Decision Making and Practical Tools for Students Interested in Politics. Academic Adviser in the Department of Political Science Jane Miller blended her love for politics and career development into one course.

Alumni establish first scholarship

The first scholarship for undergraduate students with disabilities at MSU will be awarded in January for the spring semester. The five Samaritan Foundation scholarships, worth $2,500 each, are offered by the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities.

GEU rallies, begins talks with U about grievance

The Graduate Employees Union and university officials met Thursday to begin the second phase of a grievance process, and when it was over, both parties said they expected the contract issue to be resolved soon. Outside, about 10 to 15 union members rallied together to show support for their three representatives attending the meeting.

RHA announces fall 2002 budget

The general assembly of the Residence Halls Association approved its budget for the fall semester Wednesday night. The expenses for fall semester’s budget is $372,430.95.

The College of Arts and Letters’ FORA: Lectures in the Arts and Humanities, will begin their 2002-03 series with “An Evening with Arthur Caplan” at 7:30 p.m Monday in the Kellogg Center auditorium.

Housing & Food Services vice president gets award

Chuck Gagliano has received what he calls a “surprise award.” The assistant vice president for Housing & Food Services was nominated by the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety for the Respected College Administrator Award. The annual award is presented by the Michigan Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators - the state’s organization of campus police chiefs. Former MSU police Chief Bruce Benson nominated Gagliano for the award before the chief retired from the department. “It’s really nice to be recognized for work done,” Gagliano said.

Singer to perform

Jessie Young, lead singer of East Lansing’s Pushing 33 will perform from 12-1 p.m. today in the Union’s main lounge.
