Ethiopian forestry to be conference topic

The history of Ethiopian forestry and its future will be discussed today at noon in Room 201 of the International Center. Tesfaye Teshome of Debub University in Ethiopia will lead the discussion. Teshome is a professor in the Wondo Genet College of Forestry.

Classes evacuated due to burnt snack food

Veterinary technology sophomore Elizabeth Ross thought "burned toast" was the culprit that caused the emergency evacuation of Bessey Hall on Wednesday afternoon.Close but not exactly.East Lansing firefighters dispatched to the scene determined that a Hot Pocket and paper towel covered a microwave vent, causing a burning smell to permeate throughout three floors of the building.The strong smell led Ross's instructor to pull the fire alarm, releasing more than 100 students and faculty from classes at about 3 p.m."It was pretty strong," Ross said as she waited outside with classmates from her Integrative Arts and Humanities course.

Dino Dash fund-raiser benefits MSU Museum

A stegosaurus, allosaurus and a skull of a T-Rex on display at the MSU Museum are the prehistoric inspirations for the MSU Federal Credit Union Dino Dash. The museum has the area's only dinosaur casts. The Dino Dash, a 5K run and walk, one-mile walk and a "mini-dash" for children six and younger, is a fund-raising event for the museum.

Women leaders discuss athletic experiences

The vice president of strategic planning, recruitment and diversity for Major League Baseball, the director of basketball operations for the Women's National Basketball Association and the vice president of the National Urban League all have something in common: They're all women. Wendy Lewis of MLB, Tracy Ellis-Ward of the WNBA, Annelle Lewis of the National Urban League and Rochelle Collins of the National Collegiate Athletic Association will talk about their experiences tonight as they participate in "Just Talkin': Women in the Major Leagues." They'll speak at 8 p.m.

Actor stars in Kabuki show at Kellogg Center

Actor Umenosuke Onoe will transform himself into an idealized Kabuki woman character Friday as the finale for Japan Week. Onoe will take his character through a process that displays skills needed by an "onnagata," or performer of feminine roles. The free event begins at 7 p.m.

Researchers awarded $10.2 million

A team of MSU researchers was awarded a $10.2 million research contract Wednesday to study the prevention and treatment methods of food and waterborne infectious diseases such as salmonella.The contract, given to the university by the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, runs until 2010.

Speaker from Benton Harbor blames police for riots

On Wednesday night, the Rev. Edward Pinckney blamed the Benton Township police for the death of Terrance Shurn, 28, in Benton Harbor in June.Shurn died when his motorcycle crashed into an abandoned building during a police chase through the city.

Ceremony to honor distinguished alumni

MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo, Trustee Dee Cook and former MSU Director of Athletics Clarence Underwood will be presented with alumni awards for their contributions to the university today. MSU will honor alumni who have made significant contributions to the university, their communities, states and nation during the awards ceremony. The event is sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association and will take place at 6:15 p.m.

Automobile makers will discuss the future of vehicle propulsion at MSU's Management Education Center in Troy on Wednesday. The discussion is one of many events that are a part of the 38th annual Broad Executive Forum.

Members of two MSU fraternities are asking students to possibly save a life with fewer than 15 minutes of their time.Alpha Phi Alpha and Lambda Phi Epsilon will sponsor a bone marrow drive from 10 a.m.

Food poisoning Web site hurt by lack of attention

A university-affiliated Web site devoted to helping users identify trends in food poisoning has drawn some interest from across the nation but not much attention overall. The Web site, www.rusick2.msu.edu, is run by officials at MSU's National Food Safety and Toxicology Center.

'U' hosts hayride for community

A brisk fall breeze brushed over the faces of Lansing-Area residents 12-year-old Kierin Kerbawy and 11-year-old James Lindsay, who both sat on bundles of hay Monday evening and gazed through the green bars of a tractor as it drove through campus. Kerbawy and Lindsay were part of the group of East Lansing residents, Lansing residents and students who joined the hayride for a trip around campus to learn about MSU's history while enjoying free doughnuts, cider and the fall night air. The "Homecoming Hayride and History: A MSU Historical Tour" was the first event in a week filled with University Activity Board-sponsored Homecoming events.

Black Student Alliance leader resigns; VP assumes position

The president of MSU's largest group within the Council of Racial Ethnic Students resigned at a meeting last Thursday, but the group is still planning to continue its work as planned. Black Student Alliance President Latisha Heath resigned from her position.

Professor to speak on monkey behavior

MSU students will have the opportunity hear a lecture from Paul Vasey, a researcher who studied Japanese Macaques in their consistent preference for same-sex partners, despite evolutionary theories that would demonstrate otherwise.The seminar, "Sexual Partner Preference in Female Japanese Macaques," will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Capital campaign ahead of schedule

Several organizations, people and groups donated gifts to MSU as part of the capital campaign, an effort to raise $1.2 billion by 2007 to grow an MSU endowment.Bob Thomas, information officer for University Development, said a silent phase of the campaign began in 1999 before it was announced to the public in 2002.
