Nursing College receives more than $1.1M to fix shortage

The Michigan Nursing Corps is awarding more than $1.1 million in grant funding to the MSU College of Nursing to address a shortage of nurses and nursing faculty, MSU announced today. The grants are meant to increase the number of nursing faculty through financial aid to students in the College of Nursing’s graduate programs, by encouraging them to graduate faster and give back through nursing education.

RHA supports E.L. City Council riot ordinance

Members of the Residence Halls Association general assembly showed their support Wednesday for an East Lansing City Council ordinance that would clarify riot conduct, following a presentation by East Lansing police Chief Tom Wibert and Assistant City Attorney Tom Yeadon.

Scholars aim to integrate sciences

Even in the 21st century, there is one part of civilization that needs integrating. At the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, in February, MSU integrative studies professor Jon Miller and academics from around the world spoke at a symposium about the Chicago Council for Science and Technology, or C2ST.

ECAC addresses changes in calendar and civility

The academic calendar survey and good manners were the main topics of discussion at Tuesday’s Executive Committee of Academic Council meeting. A version of the survey that was sent to faculty earlier this year about the academic calendar is now available to students via the ANGEL homepage, said Deborah Moriarty, a professor in the College of Music and a member of ECAC.

MSU alumnus wins 2nd place in statewide business competition

MSU alumnus Sam Hogg is an example of putting knowledge gained at MSU to real world use. Hogg, a 2008 graduate, launched his brainchild, online gift card kiosk GiftZip.com, late last year after dreaming up the idea in a supply chain management class taught by professor Steven Melnyk.

Debaters qualify for nationals

Two teams within MSU’s Debate Team qualified to participate in the National Debate Tournament, which is set to be held at the University of Texas in Austin. At least two teams from MSU have qualified to compete for the last 12 years. They have won the title twice.

MSU professor to discuss Mich. economy in lecture

Students and faculty can get a glimpse into Michigan’s economic future Wednesday when economics professor Charles Ballard gives a lecture at Fairchild Theatre. “Michigan’s Economic Future is Not an Oxymoron: Confessions of an MSU Economist,” is the second installment of ASMSU’s Last Lecture Series.

Atheist icon to speak at Wharton

Richard Dawkins, a famous British atheist and popular science writer, will speak at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall. Dawkins wrote “The Selfish Gene” in 1976, which popularized the gene-centered view of evolution.

MSU group brings culture to campus

From underneath stage lights and vibrant costumes came an alternative type of education about culture for MSU students. The Asian Pacific American Student Organization, or APASO, held its 10th biennial Cultural Vogue at the Auditorium, a celebration of modern and traditional Asian culture.

Progress in diversity

To audiology and speech sciences sophomore Carolyn McLean, interacting with students from an array of backgrounds is one of the best parts of MSU. “I think my culture is great; other cultures are probably great, too. And if I never experience them, then I never know,” said McLean. “I see many different types of people, so I love that about (MSU).”

Former RHA presidents join in election events

After almost eight hours of questions and debate, MSU’s Residence Halls Association, or RHA, elected a new president for the 2009-10 school year Wednesday night. Emma Perot, a hospitality business sophomore, was chosen from three candidates, including RHA Vice President Kevin Fleury and RHA TV director Scott Bishop.
