MSU recycles students’ unwanted items

The end of the school year in East Lansing typically means copious abandoned furniture, clothing and household items up for grabs, lying on the side of the road. However, East Lansing and MSU officials are seeking to eliminate such waste by teaming up for the Pack Up, Pitch In recycling program.

Health officials brace for swine flu's possible spread to Mich.

As swine flu increases in prevalence across the U.S. and possible cases begin to appear in Michigan, state health officials are making preparations in the event of an outbreak. The U.S. government declared a health emergency Sunday after 20 cases were reported. The U.S. first became aware of the virus Friday, Ingham County spokesman Marcus Cheatham said.

MSU wins $50,000 research grant

A collaborative grant awarded Tuesday to MSU will give the university $50,000 to research development in Africa. The university is one of 20 U.S. colleges and universities to receive funds to address Africa’s environmental and developmental challenges.

Med students rally for anti-smoking laws

Hundreds of students and other concerned citizens gathered Thursday at the Capitol steps to lobby for legislation to ban smoking in Michigan workplaces. The health care rally was organized by the American Medical Student Association, or AMSA, Student Osteopathic Medical Association and the MSU College of Human Medicine.

Ambassador stresses U.S.-Canada relations

As Canadian ambassador to the United States, Michael Wilson spoke via satellite to a room full of scholars, business leaders and politicians Wednesday morning in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building. He advocated for strong Canada-U.S. relations, especially for border states such as Michigan.

E.L. feels squeeze as it plans budget

The economy’s impact on city services was reflected in sections of the city’s budget, which was presented Tuesday to the East Lansing City Council. The city’s human services, parking fund and capital improvement received little or no increase in funding, due in part to difficult economic times, council members said.

More Common Ground acts announced

Stone Temple Pilots are among the three new acts added to the lineup for the 10th Annual Common Ground Music Festival, slated to be held July 6-12. Los Lonely Boys and Billy Squier also were announced as performers at the festival, which will be held at Adado Riverfront Park in downtown Lansing.

Famed zookeeper draws attention to local project

To help boost their Rhino Expansion Project, the Potter Park Zoo, 1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave., in Lansing, invited a special friend for support. America’s best-known zookeeper, Jack Hanna, and some of his animal friends visited the zoo Tuesday evening to chat, bark and growl about animal education and black rhinoceros conservation.

US-127 ramp to be demolished Friday

The ramp and bridge from southbound US-127 to eastbound I-96 will be demolished Friday to begin a project to rebuild the structure this summer. Work on the bridge will be done with one lane of traffic maintained at all times on the two-lane roadway.
