Local parishes to combine

Two will become one on July 1, 2009 — that is, St. John Student Parish and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. The two parishes will examine which programs are compatible and combine their resources to reduce redundancies and form a more unified community.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama unveiled a plan Tuesday to provide $5 billion in federal funding to protect and restore the Great Lakes. The plan would be funded by money saved from reducing tax breaks for oil companies and would only be enacted if he’s elected.

City Center II developer overcoming troubles

East Lansing’s skyline might not be getting a little higher any time soon. City Center II, a $116.4 million project slated for the Grand River Avenue and Abbot Road area, is being developed by Strathmore Development Co. The company is developing Broadway Village — a similar project — in Ann Arbor, where construction has yet to begin.

Protester pleads guilty to arson

Marie Jeanette Mason, one of four people charged with setting the 1999 New Year’s Eve fire in Agriculture Hall, pleaded guilty Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids to involvement in the arson.
