Student pleads not guilty in thefts

Lyman Briggs sophomore Nicholas Tisdale pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon in Detroit’s 36th District Court on charges of receiving and concealing stolen property, said Todd Flood, managing partner of Flood Lanctot Connor Stablein, PLLC.

House, Senate pass final budget bills

The state House and Senate passed the final budget bills Wednesday in advance of their Friday deadline, avoiding a government shutdown. Both houses passed the higher education budget Tuesday, approving a 2.8 percent funding cut to MSU and other public universities.

Cricket club competes in tournament

The MSU Cricket Club, or MSUCC, recently returned from competing in the American College Cricket Midwest Conference Championship this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. MSU defeated the College of Wooster and fell to Ohio State University, vice president of the MSUCC and accounting senior Adnan Dalal said. The team holds practices from 8-11 p.m.

BEACON Center publishes 1st report

After five years of research by a collaboration of Spartan biologists, engineers and computer scientists, MSU’s BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action published its first report since opening its doors earlier this year. The study focuses on why, in a survival of the fittest state of nature, organisms help each other, said Jeff Clune, an MSU alumnus and lead author of the study. By witnessing digital evolution in motion, researchers now are able to better understand the behavior of the altruism gene.

Lucious healing from surgery

After undergoing a successful knee arthroscopy for a small meniscus tear in his left knee Tuesday, MSU junior guard Korie Lucious is expected to be out for 2-6 weeks, according to a statement from MSU Athletic Communications.

As Genesee County commissioners work to balance the county’s budget prior to the Friday deadline, officials at the MSU Extension office in Genesee County, Mich., are bracing for the potential of steep cuts.

RHA brings Passion Pit to MSU campus

Alternative pop band Passion Pit will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at the MSU Auditorium. The group will play as part of the Campus Consciousness Tour, a program developed to promote environmental consciousness on campus. Canadian rapper Drake came to MSU as part of the Campus Consciousness spring 2010 tour. “It’s a program … to enhance college students’ ideas and educate them about how to be environmentally friendly,” said Emily Tschirhart, spokeswoman for Residence Halls Association. Tickets are $21 for students and $30 for the public.

Lansing AIDS walk brings awareness, donations

Tim Barron remembers when HIV and AIDS didn’t have names. The Lansing Radio DJ said he knew friends who contracted the disease, saw the early stages of its research and publicity and now is doing his part to help. Barron, a radio DJ for WQTX (92.1), emceed the Lansing Area AIDS Network’s, or LAAN, AIDS Walk Lansing/East Lansing 2010 Sunday, starting at Valley Court Park, 400 Hillside Court, circling around the Bailey Neighborhood and ending back at the park. The festivities began at Valley Court Park, with tents set up for participants and corporate sponsors for those registering.

Dept. of Energy moves FRIB project forward

Recent approvals given by U.S. Department of Energy, or DOE, officials for MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, nudges the multimillion dollar project closer to completion toward the end of the decade. On Thursday, the FRIB project was issued a Finding of No Significant Impact, or FONSI, status by the DOE.

Recycle-Rama takes in large haul Saturday

About 20,000 pounds of scrap metal, 200 gallons of grease and oil, a truckload of clothes, 2.5 tons of appliances and other items were gathered at Recycle-Rama on Saturday at the Ingham County Health Department. Recycle-Rama offered free disposal of items such as TVs, refrigerators and other goods that usually cost money to recycle.
