MSU students play integral role in mentoring with Big Brother Big Sisters program

Big brother William Martinez, who is a MSU Ph.D. student studying physics BW, said he joined the program because he simply wants to be there for someone. "I want to be a positive role model," Martinez said. "There's a lot of people who need a little bit more than they have and so if I can just be a little bit of something there, then that's really all I'm looking for."

Abrams Planetarium to receive birthday upgrades

As a result of its 50th birthday celebration in February, the Abrams Planetarium will be receiving an upgrade. Its 20-year-old DigiStar 2 projection system will be replaced by a DigiStar 5, a two-projector system with clearer images creating a more accurate representation of the night sky.

Spencer's Kitchen and Bar to change name again

The owner, Spencer Soka, said the first name change was the result of acquiring a liquor license last year. Due to customer confusion and the desire to establish a brand, the restaurant has now changed its name to the more recognizable State Side Deli and Pub, to join similarly named restaurants in Okemos and Howell, Mich.

Students with gym memberships obtain higher GPAs, study finds

Pivarnik said the data shows the correlation between purchasing a membership, GPA and retention. MSU isn’t only interested in the GPAs of the student body, retention — students completing a degree — is important, too. The study did not address whether or not participants actively used the gym membership.

Sigma Chi MSU chapter house undergoes $1 million plus remodel

“It was decided (to remodel the house) a couple years ago,” Nemesi said. “We were coming up on the 50th anniversary of the house, it was built in 1963, and we started talking about the fundraising and all that type of stuff, and figured if we remodeled it right, it would be able to go the next 50 years.”
