ASMSU’s Student Assembly Finance Committee unanimously passed a previously controversial bill — giving $2,000 more than requested to fund a documentary and concert on campus.

YouVote registers stragglers at Rock

YouVote and the University Activities Board, or UAB, gave students one final chance to register to vote Monday at the rock on Farm Lane. For Michigan residents who wanted to vote in the Nov. 4 election, Monday was the last opportunity. YouVote is a nonpartisan organization on campus.

New home brings fresh start

Arlene Nickless watched her late husband’s dreams come true last week: Her family now has a stable home and their three sons have bright futures ahead of them. After entering their new home, built by ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” for the first time Friday, the Nickless family received more good news on Saturday.

Police investigate death of MSU student

One week after a fatal house fire in Wright Township, investigators still have questions about the death of an MSU sophomore and three others. Katherine A. Brown was found dead with her boyfriend Jeremy Zimmer, his mother Sharmaine and his brother Tyler in the Zimmers’ house Sept. 29, according to The Grand Rapids Press.

Health department reaffirms its E. coli suspicions

While the Michigan Department of Community Health targeted iceberg lettuce from Aunt Mid’s Produce Co. as the cause of last month’s statewide E. coli outbreak, the company has yet to confirm any responsibility. Dominic Riggio, the president of Aunt Mid’s, said the Detroit-based food distributor has fully cooperated with the health department and Michigan Department of Agriculture’s investigation.

MSU Graduate School reports fewer doctoral degrees awarded

Though there has been a reported growth in the number of doctoral degrees conferred between 2006 and 2007 by U.S. graduate schools, the numbers at MSU show there hasn’t been such an increase in East Lansing. A survey released by the Council of Graduate Schools, or CGS, shows the number of doctorates given by U.S. graduate schools increased by 9 percent between 2006 and 2007 compared with an average annual growth of 2 percent during the past decade.

Campus to host YouVote program today

The YouVote program, a partnership between MSU and the city of East Lansing to educate students about voting, will hold a “Register at the Rock” event from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. today in front of the Auditorium, near the rock on Farm Lane.

Dino Dash raises funds for MSU Museum

After 23 years, Joyce Banish hasn’t grown tired of watching people run in circles. The vice president of marketing at the MSU Federal Credit Union loves this year’s Dinosaur Dash 5K just as much as the very first one. Banish joined with thousands of others Sunday at the MSU Museum for the MSU Federal Credit Union Dinosaur Dash.

New Nickless family home revealed

HOLT – The cheers of, “Go Green, Go White!” and, “Move that bus!” were almost interchangeable Friday as the Nickless family finally had their new home unveiled by the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” crew. There was a large MSU presence on Eifert Road, with appearances by MSU cheerleaders, volunteers who worked on the site throughout the week and of course, Sparty.

Obama's MSU debut

Standing before an estimated 20,000-person crowd that would have overfilled Breslin Center by 3,720 people, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama received a Spartans basketball jersey with his name and the number “08” on the back Thursday afternoon.
