Reparations are not worth a dime

I have always been aware of the extremely complex and sensitive nature of race relations in America, I was reminded of this after talking to a political activist at the Union Activities Board when I attended a group viewing of the presidential debate. Then, somehow we started talking about how biased history books are in misrepresenting the role of women and minorities.

Surrounded by the work of feminist artist Miriam Schapiro, a panel of four discussed the role of feminism in art Tuesday at Kresge Art Museum.The Women’s Studies Program and the Department of Art held a symposium, “Feminism and Art: Differing Perspectives Over 30 Years,” concerning women’s roles in art in the past and present.“I can’t take anything for granted,” said studio art graduate student April Liu, who was one of the panelists.

Event teaches U etiquette

More than 100 students took a big step in ensuring they wouldn’t get an “E” for dining etiquette Tuesday. The Office of Supportive Services brought students from all years and majors to “Professional Etiquette and Tableside Manners,” an event to prepare students for meal interviews and meetings they may attend in a professional setting. The program was held Tuesday at the Brody Complex’s Lafayette Square.

I am a white guy who attended the Black Power Rally on Friday night at the Auditorium. What a great event this turned out to be: Live rapping, African dance and poetry were just a few of the performances there to be experienced.

Charles Fraser makes some good points in his column (“Team competition should be removed in spirit of Olympic Games,” SN 10/19), especially about the need to reestablish amateurism as a guiding principle in the Olympics. Evaluation forms to go on Web

Students will soon have access to student opinions of specific classes and faculty members via the Internet.Academic Council voted Tuesday to implement the public, online version of the Student Instructional Rating System evaluation forms - or SIRS - for use by the entire MSU community.But the Internet version of the forms known as the Student Public Evaluation System - or SPES - may not be available until fall 2001 or after.The topic has been put off for discussion at past meetings and Tuesday’s vote came too late in the semester for immediate action.“It’s going to take a while before it’s implemented,” said ASMSU Academic Assembly Chairperson Charles McHugh, a voting member of the Academic Council.“But all in all, we’re pretty happy.”ASMSU is the university’s undergraduate student government.

Forum to discuss MIP, drunken driving laws

LANSING - The Lansing City Council will hold public hearings on proposed changes to its drunken driving and minor in possession ordinances Monday. The changes would increase penalties for each of the offenses, bringing them in line with new state laws. “Basically, we’re doing this because the state law, which has been changed within the last year or so, made some changes to the penalties,” said Councilmember Joan Bauer, chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee.

Everywhere I go, problems and stress are pouring out of people’s conversations and sizzling on the sidewalks, heating up everyone else that walks over them. Around this time of year it seems like everything is coming down on everyone, at least from the conversations I’ve been a part of or overheard in random places.
