Some MSU students are doing their part to make wintertime a little easier on those less fortunate.The North Complex Black Caucus, McDonel Hall Senate, Residence Life and the MSU police are holding the second “Help Keep a Family Warm This Winter” coat drive.Officer Kahlil Wasson, who helped coordinate the event for the MSU police, said the drive has collected more than 200 coats since the drive began on Nov.

Shakespeare wrote, “What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Until recently, that was a nice line to recite and use in English papers, but now it holds a little more meaning for me. I recently discovered that my last name is spelled wrong.

Police identify suspect in robbery

Lansing police officials announced Tuesday that they are seeking a local man who they believe is responsible for the most recent bank robbery in the city. Terrence Leontha Wallace, 31, is described as a black male, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 194 pounds.

Program combats poverty

The university’s International Studies and Programs is seeking applicants who want to make a positive difference in their homelands.Designed as a graduate studies capstone, the Thoman Fellowship Program prepares students to confront hunger and poverty in their communities.Established in 1982, the program brings together advanced doctoral students from developing countries to address issues locally and back home.“They gain a sense of what it takes to address poverty and hunger,” said Tom Carroll, faculty adviser for the program and a social science professor.Fellows meet weekly as a group throughout the course of the academic year and they also volunteer at local agencies.

Icers prepare for last place Ferris State

After having to battle back to earn three points from struggling Bowling Green last week, the MSU hockey team is looking to pick up four points from last place Ferris State this weekend.The top-ranked Spartans (11-1-3 overall, 8-1-2 CCHA) and the Bulldogs (3-8-3, 1-7-2) will meet for the only time this season in a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday.Friday’s game will be played at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids and Saturday’s game at Munn Ice Arena, both at 7:05 p.m.Despite Ferris’ record, senior right wing John Nail said they’re a talented team.“I think they’re a deceiving team because of their record,” Nail said.

Fill subject lines with song lyrics

Like Kevin Hardy, I have struggled with the e-mail subject-line issue (“Please Read: Don’t include subjects with e-mails,” SN 12/1). For a while I, too, quit using subject lines altogether, but I felt guilty for copping out and filling my friends’ boxes with boring “none”s.

Letter insulting to many Christians

While I in no way endorse John LaFleur’s narrow-minded views (“ Retailers sold out Christmas to be politically correct,” SN 11/30), I felt it necessary to take issue with some responses the column received. Susie Farnell’s letter (“Overadvertising is fault of Christians,” SN 12/4) was a contradiction in itself.

Scholarship set up in Bolgers honor

Ann Bolger only spent 18 months at MSU, but the memory of her will last much longer.Her family has set up the Ann Marie Bolger Scholarship at the College of Education in remembrance of the Residence Life director.
