Cigarettes are a choice, not morality issue

I am a smoker. I really like cigarettes. I smoke around a pack of them every day. I have smoked through respiratory infections, family dysfunction, hellish work days, romantic woes and term papers. I buy cigarettes in cartons. One of my hobbies is collecting cigarettes from every state - the tax stamp on the bottom of the packs differs from state to state. I have no intention of quitting any time soon.

Cager adjusts to life off court

Candice Jackson has never spent more than a few days off the court during the past 10 years.Now, the women’s basketball team’s freshman guard from Lansing Everett High School will have to spend her basketball time in physical therapy.After starting 7 of 13 games and becoming the team’s fourth-leading scorer, an MRI Tuesday morning confirmed she has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

MSU could lose an ally in bringing attention to higher education issues in the state.University of Michigan President Lee Bollinger is on a list of 30 to 40 candidates being considered to head Harvard University, the student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, reported.Harvard is searching for a chief executive to replace President Neil Rudenstine, 63, who is retiring in June.

Seniors rack up 100th career victory at home

There’s no place like home for MSU basketball.The Spartans extended Division I basketball’s longest home winning streak to 38 games Wednesday night with their 84-53 win over Northwestern.Fans are becoming accustomed to blowouts at Breslin Student Events Center.The win marked the 100th win for the senior class.

Students give time, help others

By BRANDI LEWANDOWSKI The State News Melissa Peele graduated in December with a little help from her fellow MSU students. “I’ve had numerous books read to me by other students and I’ve also called on them to help me research papers,” Peele said. Peele, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English, has been blind since she was four months old. When she became a student at MSU in 1994, she utilized a reading program provided by the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, 120 Bessey Hall.

Cervical Health Month reminds women of the importance of pap smear tests

In efforts to promote awareness of women’s health, January has been designated National Cervical Health Month for the second consecutive year.To encourage health care providers to open their doors to women who have not had a Pap smear in over three years, Friday is designated as free Pap smear day by the coalition.“The announcement is made nationwide to try to encourage providers to promote it however, it is implemented on the local level,” Alan Kaye, executive director of the coalition said.The Pap smear is a test that is performed when there are changes of the cervix.

City project relocates long-standing merchants

For 30 years Gina’s Hallmark has sold gift paper, ribbons and bows at 301 E. Grand River Ave.But now, Pam Coughlin has packaged her store in boxes in an effort to make room for The City Center Project - a redevelopment city officials will use to help revitalize the downtown.Coughlin began to hear rumors three years ago that her store may be relocated, and a week and a half ago Hallmark employees began to move boxes to a new location at 539 E.

Spartans look to recover from loss

Coming off a disappointing loss, the MSU men’s basketball team hopes to rebound tonight against Northwestern.In its first two Big Ten games the Spartans started slow, only to find themselves down at halftime.Against Penn State the Spartans posted an impressive second half to win, but against Indiana they faltered.Sophomore guard Jason Richardson said MSU can’t afford that lack of urgency in a conference like the Big Ten.“We come out of the gates like that and we’re going to lose a lot of games,” he said.
