BSA creates standards for events

Black Student Alliance proposed eight community standards at a Thursday town hall meeting that members say would help prevent future conflicts at social events sponsored by black student organizations. One of the standards suggests only MSU students be welcome at on-campus events sponsored by those organizations. The group hopes to make the town hall meeting an annual event for black students to share ideas.“The whole purpose of this meeting is to first, identify the issues, and second, to develop the community standards that we think are important for us to have productive and safe events,” said Murray Edwards, the senior coordinator for the Office of Minority Student Affairs.“If we begin to have high expectations of each other, this will work.”The need for standards became evident after several recent violent events broke out at black student organization-sponsored events, some say.And if the fights continued, many thought the student organizations would no longer be allowed to host events on campus.BSA president Tonya Upthegrove said most black student organizations do not have houses or other places off campus to cater to their needs and are often at the mercy of the university.“If something goes down, it’s going to hit us, and it’s going to hit us hard,” she said.
