Mayor addresses education, transit issues

LANSING - Mayor David Hollister boldly emphasized his support of a $388.5 million Lansing School District bond Monday during his eighth State of the City address.Students, educators, residents and elected officials attended the 45-minute speech at Pattengill Middle School, 1017 Jerome St., in Lansing.Hollister chose to deliver his speech from the aging 79-year-old middle school to show support for the bond proposal.“The physical condition of our city’s schools is absolutely unacceptable,” Hollister said.

Mini horses breed womans passion

MASON - Nestled just south of the Interstate 96 and Okemos Road intersection, a mile or so from the electric signs and cash registers of capitalism, Westwind Farms is a curious picture of rural American life.There, Cammie Cavanaugh reigns supreme, walking with ease and familiarity through red stables, surrounded by barn cats, fences and multicolored horses.You won’t find many saddles around Westwind Farms, though - the farm, 3146 Okemos Road, specializes in miniature horses.

RHAs resolution passed in 1999

I would like to quickly address the issue that was raised with regards to RHA’s lack of effort on the issue of peepholes (“Safe living,” SN 1/24). First, I would like to begin by stating a few facts. One, the resolution that RHA passed supporting peepholes was passed unanimously in fall of 1999.

This letter is in response to Beau Taylor’s “Christ was not a civil rights leader” (SN 1/25). Although I have not read the letter Taylor responded to, I feel some of his remarks demand my reply.

Art class shares in project

D’Ann de Simone’s painting class took an opportunity to weave its way into the community - literally. Members of the class, Studio Art 420, Painting, are just a few of many East Lansing residents who have participated in producing a room-sized tapestry project under the direction of local artist Nancy McRay. The students met Monday in The Art Apartment, 210 Abbott Road, where their contributions were added to numerous materials and objects from community members already woven into the tapestry. McRay said the community’s involvement with the project so far has been overwhelming. “I have this huge sense of responsibility for what’s been given to me,” McRay said.

Driving back from Columbus late Saturday night, foreshadowing images were running through my mind - visions of turnovers, careless passes and weak rebounding.
