Amtrak keeps E.L. stops

Megan Dowd takes Amtrak’s International Route from East Lansing home to Chicago at least once a month.Fortunately for Dowd, the Michigan Transportation Committee approved a $5.7 million subsidy for Amtrak last week in order to save two of its most popular routes running.The approval follows plans by the 22,000-mile passenger rail system to reroute its train service, cutting the stops in East Lansing as well as Durand, Flint, Lapeer and Port Huron, in order to save money.Dowd, a communication freshman from Winnetka, Ill., is relieved that her route will not be removed.“If it weren’t here I wouldn’t be able to get home,” she said Sunday after stepping off a train.

Overcrowded area jail releases inmates

Ingham County Sheriff’s Office officials were forced to release nearly 50 inmates Friday because of overcrowding.State law forces jail administrators to bring the inmate population down to capacity if it remains above for seven consecutive days.

William Coté shares his insight as a journalist and a teacher in his new book “Covering Violence.” “It’s a nonfiction book written especially for journalists, students or anybody in the public who’s concerned about media coverage and victims,” said Coté, who has coordinated MSU’s Victims and the Media Program since 1991. Hip-hop hits Carnegie Hall for historic musical event

NEW YORK - It’s not surprising that Carnegie Hall gave Wyclef Jean the distinction of being the first hip-hop artist to play the revered concert hall. As was clear on Friday night, when Jean played host and entertainer during an all-star benefit for his self-titled foundation, there is perhaps no other artist in hip-hop - or most other music genres - as multifaceted and as talented as the engaging Jean. Jean proved that in his Carnegie debut, as he mixed Bach with hip-hop, jazz with rap, and collaborated with the likes of Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston for a captivating, cross-cultural concert. “See, I’m the new Sammy Davis Jr.,” Jean joked during the event, which also included performances by Destiny’s Child, Charlotte Church, Macy Gray, Marc Anthony, Steve Marley and reggae band Third World.

E.L. survey results to help neighborhood relations

Like teenagers and parents who disagree about curfews and music, students and nonstudents in East Lansing sometimes disagree about the neighborhoods they live in, according to survey results from the Community Relations Coalition.The survey was sent in October to 543 residents in two sections of the Bailey Neighborhood, one section of the Oakhill Neighborhood and most of the Red Cedar Neighborhood.The survey asked questions relating to neighborhood relations.

Icers defeat Miami in fifth shutout of new year

For the second straight home stand, MSU’s opponent left Munn Ice Arena without scoring a goal in the entire series.This time it was the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks that fell victim to the suffocating Spartan defense and impenetrable goaltending by sophomore Ryan Miller in 1-0 and 5-0 losses Friday and Saturday.MSU (20-1-4 overall, 13-1-3 CCHA) ran its unbeaten streak to 22 (19-0-3), one short of the school record set two years ago.
