U gives varsity letters to women athletes

Sally Belloli remembers her years at MSU well.From 1965-67, aside from lugging books back and forth from home to class, Belloli donned green and white as she took the field for MSU’s field hockey team.Unfortunately, like so many other female athletes of her time, the right halfback was never officially recognized for her commitment.But that all changed in March.MSU’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced it will award varsity “S” letters to female student-athletes who competed prior to 1980.“I think it’s great,” Belloli said.

Gymnasts reflect as program nears end

Emotions may swell. Tears may fall. Words of solace may be shared. For MSU’s 18-member men’s gymnastics team, walking off the mat after this weekend’s NCAA Championships will mean more than just the end to another season. Fifty-three years after its first match, MSU is preparing to say goodbye to the program. “It’s kind of hard to believe when you’ve been doing it so long - like 13 years - it’s just going to end all of the sudden,” mechanical engineering freshman gymnast Joel Vargo said of his career.

Lottery allots scarce tickets for students

A message to MSU students who were able to secure tickets to college basketball’s and hockey’s prized NCAA tournaments: Consider yourselves lucky. The MSU Athletics Department, as it has become accustomed to doing in recent years, held a lottery for basketball tickets.
