Player blames disorders for missed meetings

The missed functions that ultimately led to the dismissal of Jeremy Jackson from the top-ranked hockey squad might have been attributed to narcolepsy and hypersomnia, two sleep disorders the freshman center says he was recently diagnosed with.Jackson, a Chilliwack, British Columbia native, was removed from the team last week following a two-week saga of team suspensions and missed functions, classes and team study sessions.While Jackson has been unavailable for comment since the dismissal, he spoke with The State News on two different occasions earlier this month, saying his doctor said the condition requires him to get “17 hours a night to average a normal sleep schedule.”Narcolepsy causes brief attacks of deep sleep with an unknown cause, while hypersomnia involves sleeping for excessive periods of time mixed with intervals of normal sleeping and waking.“Right now, there are a lot of problems with my physical condition,” said Jackson, who said he’s visited a sleep specialist.

Judo Club readies for national tournament

By KEITAYA LOCKETT For The State News Since 1965, the MSU Judo Club has offered a more recreational approach to the sport, though the club participates in many competitions throughout the year. The club has been preparing for months for its national tournament in March. Judo, which means “the gentle way” in Japanese, is a martial art form consisting of throwing, grappling and standing rather than ground fighting.

Event will kick off reconstruction of Hannah Middle School

The City of East Lansing will mark the beginning of Hannah Middle School’s shift into a community center tomorrow with a Reconstruction Kick-off. The event will include speeches by several city officials and a slide presentation by construction officials from The Christman Co. and architects from Mitchell and Mouat.

Donation rate could slow with economy
