Jim Hines, a 1996 MSU graduate, said when he was 16 a friend told him she was raped. Now he has heard it too often. “I’ve lost track of the number of friends who have been raped,” Hines said.

MSU junior left wing Steve Clark said Saturday was “maybe the biggest disappointment” of his career.It seems like an odd statement considering Saturday was the day the top-ranked Spartans hosted “The Cold War,” broke the world hockey attendance record and tied archrival Michigan 3-3 in Spartan Stadium.Many of Clark’s teammates actually called Saturday one of the best, most memorable days of their lives.

American Hi-Fi rocks campus with bare rock n roll
It was a night of drummers and ex-drummers as Boston-based rockers American Hi-Fi performed for a crowd of about 400 at the Fairchild Theatre Monday night. In support of its self-titled debut effort, the band performed many of its radio hits including “Flavor of the Weak” and “Fool for You.” It’s too bad American Hi-Fi didn’t get as good as a response as it deserved.

They sound like Lit. They’re touring with Lit. They’re signed to Lit’s own RCA-distributed Dirty Martini label. They look like Sum 41 or a PG-13-rated Rancid. Go figure. Handsome Devil is riding the recent pop-punk wave like a Sum 41 or Blink 182.

Athenaeum album is poor mans Eve 6
Like Eve 6? Nope me either, so you might as well quit reading. However, if you are one of those Eve 6 faithful, you may want to read on. Way back in 1998 Eve 6 released its self-titled debut and helped redefine an entire genre in the business - bad music. But if you were one of the many who rushed out on impulse to pick up Eve 6’s CDs, you will probably like Athenaeum - one of the worst clones of crappy mainstream music that I have heard in quite some time. It cannot be helped if your voice sounds like someone else’s.

Together with Steve Pickney, the former MSU students make up the group Tex Morrocco, a two-man guitar and harmonica act. The two, which has been playing together as long as they can remember, had come to the Union to perform at Noontimes.

Rick Pniewski appreciates good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll bands - which is why he’s excited about American Hi-Fi performing at the Fairchild Theatre tonight. “It’s just good basic rock ’n’ roll,” said Pniewski, manager of CD Warehouse, 228 Abbott Road.

I was delighted to see your article on local music in Friday’s State News (“Broken melody”10/5). But I wasn’t at all surprised by what I found in the content. Any exposure for local bands is great, but it seems as though every time there is an article on local music, the same bands are mentioned.

U gains exclusive MRI magnet for research, clinical use
An 8-foot-wide, 17-ton magnet was carefully attached to a gigantic yellow crane by two fearless workers. The magnet was then strategically lowered through the roof of MSU’s Medical Resonance Imaging Facility, allowing the university to join some elite company. It’s not just any magnet - it is one of only four magnets in the country that can do whole body imaging, and it’s the first in Michigan. The other whole body imaging magnets are found at Harvard University, the University of Illinois and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Magnetic resonance imaging is a nonradiation technique that provides images of the internal structure of the body by using magnetic fields and radio waves. In addition to producing high resolution images, the magnet has twice the magnetic field strength of the one it’s replacing. Mark DeLano, an assistant professor of radiology, said the new magnet is the first of its kind to be used clinically in Michigan.
