Students brush up on dinner etiquette

More than 140 students gathered at Brody Hall on Wednesday to learn that along with having a great resume, dinner etiquette is also important in landing a dream job.Officials from the Office of Supportive Services hosted the second annual “Professional Etiquette and Tableside Manners” program, which prepared students for professional meal interviews that may make or break their careers.“Students aren’t as prepared as they could be in entering the professional arena,” said Patrick Smith, an academic guidance specialist who organized the event.

M-golf grabs second

The MSU men’s golf team put together a second-place effort Wednesday at the Adams Cup of Newport, in Newport, R.I. Out of 17 schools, New Mexico claimed the top spot with a three round score of 854, seven strokes lower than MSU’s 861. The Spartans ended the first round in 13th with a score of 295, but returned with scores of 281 in the second round and 285 in the final round.

Octoberfest serves up hockey alternative

Those looking for an alternative scene to “The Cold War” madness this weekend can make the trek to Lansing’s Old Town for Octoberfest 2001. Traditionally Octoberfest is a German harvest celebration, and the Lansing event will pay respects to its roots with a beer tent and traditional Polka player.

Mark Gross has fond memories of the song “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones. When Gross was a guest for the first time on “The Tonight Show,” that was the song the Rolling Stones jammed. “It was the greatest experience I could ever ask for,” he said.

Somerville gets award

The spotlight on senior Ann Somerville got brighter this week as she earned cross-country Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors following her latest performance. Somerville’s 13th place finish helped the Spartans nab a fifth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. She is the first Spartans’ women’s cross-country runner to earn the honor since teammate Michelle Carson was given the award for the week of Sept.

A persistent drizzle Friday night forced Michigan to cancel its only scheduled outdoor practice before “The Cold War” and take shelter inside Munn Ice Arena.But the host Spartans braved the elements and skated on the portable rink inside Spartan Stadium for about 30 minutes Friday.

W-tennis ready for U-M

The women’s tennis team takes on intrastate-rival Michigan at 10 a.m., today at the Wolverine Fall Invitational in Ann Arbor. MSU will send nine members to the tournament - its second of the year - to compete against host U-M, Bowling Green, DePaul and Marquette, among others. Freshman Mandy Caldemeyer will be looking to build on her strong performance last weekend at the MSU Spartan Cup.

Game turns from joke to reality

The first time Dave McAuliffe talked to Ron Mason about staging an outdoor hockey game in Spartan Stadium, the longtime MSU head coach just laughed.That was about five years ago, and McAuliffe, an MSU assistant coach, said he chuckled along with Mason.

A new Cold War will break out this weekend. On Saturday, MSU will set the world record for the most-attended hockey game in history, converting a football field into a hockey rink and, we hope, toppling Michigan.This game has been in the works since late June, when MSU sports officials first toyed with the idea.
