Michigan band to play Ricks

Holland, Mich.-based rockers The Green Room are back on the road following a brief summer hiatus and are scheduled to rock East Lansing tonight.The five-piece band will play a 21 and up show at 10:30 tonight at Rick’s American Cafe, 224 Abbott Road.The Green Room puts out a kind of blues meets rock meets jazz sound and pushes acoustic sound to the edge with heavy, hard beats.

Animals sit, stay and give

Dusty struggled against the slippery floor to jump up onto a blanketed table - a little jump that would enable another dog to live a longer, healthier life. Dusty, a 6-year-old yellow lab, is one of about 25 on-call donor dogs volunteered by their owners to give blood at MSU’s Small Animal Clinic. Elaine Striler, Dusty’s owner and a licensed veterinary technician at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, said the animals need to be given attention to calm them down while donating blood. “They’re more afraid of what might happen,” she said.

Area deals with storms aftermath

Life went on in the wake of the storm that struck the Lansing area as students and businesses went back to work.Unfortunately, much of the work included extensive cleanup.The powerful winds destroyed property across the Lansing area Wednesday night and made a stop at the Capital Area Transportation Authority’s headquarters, 4615 Tranter Ave.

U revises health policy; prompts students to register history

MSU health officials sent out a universitywide e-mail earlier this month urging all students to register their immunization history with the university. The Office of the University Physician reported that 70 to 80 percent of incoming students have returned their immunization report - but students who haven’t are being asked to do so as soon as possible. The university revised its immunization policy in 1999 to require all incoming undergraduate students to fill out an immunization report.

Oldsmobile Parks Fright Night attracts various spectators

Last Saturday night the line at Oldsmobile Park’s “Fright Night” stretched from the haunted stadium’s entrance nearly to Michigan Avenue. And the teeny-boppin’ youths of the Lansing area, families, students and others that waited there had a common goal: to be scared - or at least entertained. “It was good, and I was scared, definitely,” said former Lansing resident Tameko Watts after her walk through the dark, spooked-up corridors of Oldsmobile Park. “We were at Detroit last weekend and it was a lot more expensive, so this was pretty good for the price,” said Rob Slonaker, who accompanied Watts that evening. Dewitt resident Joseph Fase brought Joseph Fase Jr., 6, to Fright Night Saturday. “Um, the train was the best,” decided the younger Fase after his haunted experience.

Study finds campuses enviromentally sound

Spartan green may mean more than just school spirit. A recent study found universities and colleges are being more environmentally sound. In the report by the National Wildlife Federation, 60 percent of the campuses surveyed works to use less and less pesticides by careful location of plants. Gary Parrott, manager of Grounds Maintenance, said environmental practices are common with the grounds crew. Parrott said the university has a mixture of native plants and some exotic plants.

Lansing seeks citizens to fill vacant positions

Lansing residents wishing to work within the city government are being encouraged to apply for vacancies on various boards and commissions, Lansing officials said.Carol Wood, council member at-large, said city council is at a loss without boards and commissions being filled.“We realize everyone is busy with families,” said Wood.
