Creole Gallery presents eclectic folk rockers Saturday

Tahmineh Gueramy describes her band, Pub Domain, as an easily accessible, traditional Irish band - with a twist. “We include some American stuff like bluegrass, Cajun and old time Celtic too,” the fiddler said. Pub Domain will perform a CD release party Saturday at the Creole Gallery, 1218 Turner Road in Lansing. Mandolin player and guitarist Mike Cutler said the self-titled new album is the dead opposite of the band’s first. “On the first one, of 17 tracks, 11 were instrumental,” he said.

Distinguished professor to commemorate Black History Month at LCC

Johnnetta Cole is not your typical retired college professor. Cole travels to remote places such as the Philippines while juggling roles on community boards and organizations, publishing books and speaking to college students. Cole will be the keynote speaker at Lansing Community College’s Black History Month Keynote Address from 3-5 p.m.

Some authors have the gift to write books and know they will be successful. Carl Hiaasen is of that category.His eighth novel, “Basket Case,” is another quality piece of fiction from his already incredible résume of novels, including 1994’s “Striptease,” which was made into a movie starring Demi Moore.“Basket Case” keys around Jack Tagger, an obituary writer at a less-than-successful newspaper that is under constant pressure to be sold to new ownership.

Mentors could have role in decreased violations

Although residence hall alcohol and drug violations have dropped since the 2000 switch from resident assistants to mentors, there are varying perspectives on why the drop occurred.In 1999, there were 655 reported alcohol violations in residence halls.

Voter guide designed to reduce error in elections

State election officials announced Wednesday a campaign to combat voter error.That announcement follows a presidential election in which some East Lansing voters were turned away from polls at on-campus and off-campus precincts for not being registered properly.Secretary of State Candice Miller started a public awareness campaign designed to reduce voter error by educating the state’s more than 6.8 million registered voters.The Michigan Vote America program will include a Voter Information Guide on the department’s Web site.“It will be a wonderful tool for people to access,” Michigan Department of State spokeswoman Elizabeth Boyd said.

Capital Area Transportation Authority buses are back in service after a nearly two-hour hiatus in service, caused by this morning’s combination of heavy snowfall and freezing rain.The average CATA bus weighs 26,000 pounds, and vehicles that size don’t do well on slick roads, said Dave Smith, director of operations for CATA.“On ice they are just about the worst vehicle in the world,” Smith said.

U gets funding freeze

Gov. John Engler will recommend no increase in state funding for MSU and Michigan’s other public universities in his annual budget proposal, Lansing-based NBC affiliate WILX reported Wednesday. Engler, who attended the MSU-University of Michigan basketball game Wednesday evening at Breslin Center, would not confirm the report with The State News.

Nonsmokers need smoke-free halls

This is in response to the editorial “Smoke Free” (SN, 1/ 29). The State News’ commentary suggests that students who wish to live in a smoke-free environment should have a right to do so.
