U-M graduates to strike

The University of Michigan’s Graduate Employees Organization will have a one-day walk-out today, as members voted in favor of the action 462-106 last week. Organization members will form picket lines around major buildings and high traffic areas on the Ann Arbor campus.

South Pacific to begin Wharton Center run

If anything is colorblind, it’s love, and the perfect story to convey such a message is the musical “South Pacific,” which tests racial barriers during World War II . Dance captain Lenny Daniel said despite being written in 1949, the play’s story line is relevant today. “It also shows what the daily life was like for the soldiers,” he said. The plot centers around Nellie, a nurse from Arkansas who falls in love with a French painter named Emile.

Wal-Mart given OK to build new store

Harlene Matilda is looking forward shopping at a new Meridian Township Wal-Mart. “The new Wal-Mart will save me time from having to drive to the Wal-Mart at (Interstate) 96 and Saginaw, so it would be more convenient for me,” the East Lansing resident said. But the groundbreaking for the store on a site on Marsh Road north of Central Park Drive, has been held up for more than a year. Since November 2000, Meridian Township had been in a legal battle with developer Eyde Co. and Wal-Mart.

Windstorms cause residents to lose power

Wintery weather during spring break brought power outages and a half-inch of snow to the Lansing area, after a mostly warm and pleasant week. The area saw only a half-inch of snow but an average wind speed of 24 mph with gusts up to 54 mph.

Elders to speak about alcohol on Tuesday

Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders will speak in East Lansing Tuesday about attitudes, behaviors and perceptions associated with alcohol in university communities. Elders, the first black surgeon general, will give a speech entitled “Prevention or Punishment: Challenging the Environment of High-Risk Drinking in a University Community.” The presentation will be at 7 p.m.

Your editorial on the publication of the hateful column in Wayne State University’s student newspaper was very well done (“Moral choice,” SN 3/1). It is always important to remind people that along with rights come responsibilities.

Sprinklers disabled in burned housing complex

Investigators found sprinkler systems turned off or disabled in three buildings of an East Lansing apartment complex after a fire swept through one of its units more than a week ago. A building at Abbott Pointe Apartments, 204 East Pointe Lane, caught fire March 1 due to an electrical problem in the basement, East Lansing Fire Inspector Gerald Rodabaugh said.

Alumnus completes 1,200-mile run for cerebral palsy

With more than 1,200 miles on foot behind him, the cold sting of the Atlantic Ocean felt good on Brian Thomas’ windburned and blistered skin last week. Wrestlers place eighth

The wrestling team (5-12, 2-6) finished eighth with 54.5 points in the 2002 Big Ten Wrestling Championships hosted by Illinois. The Spartans were led by juniors Rashad Evans and Gray Maynard, who each placed fourth.

SN endorses

ASMSU is asking for more money out of students’ pockets, but the organization isn’t providing enough information to sell its plan to the undergraduate population. The organization wants student taxpayers to spend an extra $3 per semester on its services, upping its semesterly per student revenue from $13 to $16.

MIDDAY UPDATE: U-M student instructors lead walkout; hope actions bring new contract

Ann Arbor - Members of the University of Michigan’s Graduate Employees Organization led a one-day walkout today that left some students’ classes canceled.About 500 graduate student instructors at the Ann Arbor campus picketed several locations to show the organization is working without a contract.The graduate students have been negotiating with the administration since last October and several agreements were reached early Monday morning after a 16-hour marathon session.Union members said if both sides are not in a position to sign a new contract March 17, the union will vote whether to indefinitely strike.
