Animal lab officials seek more funds

The new Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory scheduled to open this fall could have the capabilities to stop the spread of diseases affecting animals, but the facility is $3 million short of funding.In hopes of receiving the difference, the Michigan Farm Bureau organized a walking tour of the existing Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory for government representatives and legislative aides Thursday.

Martin takes 2nd place at championship

Junior Sarah Martin was the runner-up in the 86th Michigan Women’s Amateur Golf Championship on Friday. Martin was defeated by Clarkston’s Mary Jane Anderson Hiestand 1-up in the title match at The Moor Course at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs. After 14 holes Anderson Hiestand led, but Martin birdied the next three holes to tie the match with 17 holes completed. Anderson Hiestand pared the 18th and final hole, with Martin still to put for par.

Minimum mess

Mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes haven’t solved the drug problem we face. It’s time Michigan began to use a more balanced system to reform drug users. Many times, incarceration has been the only option for these drug-related crimes, and treatment is not given enough consideration, possibly sending people to prison when rehabilitation would be much better suited to their case.

Restroom-space complaint filed

Standing in long lines, missing the first act after intermission and crossing your legs while praying you’re next can be a painful experience. Women know the pain of waiting to use the bathroom at sporting events, concerts, plays and practically any other public place. Lugnuts claim tie-breaker over Fort Wayne

Games entertain area festivalgoers

Day two of the Common Ground Festival seemed a little laid-back. That was, of course, unless you were one of the countless people who were swinging a golf club or having a go at a man in a dunk tank. Bands Kool & the Gang and Journey headlined the night’s festivities, but the Hole-In-One golfing challenge continued to gain popularity. Perry resident James Nanasty couldn’t stop swinging away as he was determined to win the grand prize, a $30,000 Chevrolet truck donated by Waldecker Chevrolet of Fowlerville.

Unicycling priest raises money for Eskimos

A former pastor at East Lansing’s University Lutheran Church hopes to wheel his way into the Guinness Book of World Records by unicycling from Washington to the Statue of Liberty.His trip, “One Wheel, Many Spokes,” began on April 29 and he is scheduled to arrive at the Statue of Liberty at August 10.

Lost lifeguarding

One drowning and another near drowning in the span of three days is more than enough turn the heads of area residents and park commissioners - and rightfully it has. An 11-year-old boy drowned Saturday at the Grand River’s Bunker Road Landing, and Mohammad Sohaib Fida, 13, nearly drowned July 4 at Lake Lansing Park South.

Balancing two jobs has not been easy for the mayor of East Lansing, consequently, Mark Meadows will now be trying to hitting the golf course more often.Of course, there is still a city to run.Meadows retired from his post as a Michigan assistant attorney general June 26, but he will continue to run East Lansing and work on some final cases with the attorney general’s office.
