From debt to excess, Pride March goes on

The 14th annual Michigan Pride March, Rally & Festival at the Capitol this weekend is likely to draw a large crowd of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender activists - and their supporters - from around the state. But a few months ago, many were wondering if rainbow-colored flags would fly high in the capital city Saturday. Michigan Pride Inc. faced a $14,500 shortfall in March, and some members of the LBGT community were afraid the event would be canceled. The budget problems were well known and troubled some, including Josh Boehme, who had special reasons to celebrate this year. “Since this was the first year I’m participating, I was a little worried,” the computer science junior said. Boehme, the office manager for MSU’s Alliance of Lesbian-Bi-Gay-Transgendered and Straight Ally Students, said he didn’t attend last year because he had recently come out about his sexual orientation.

Board matters

It’s easy for college students to forget the importance of K-12 education - and their roles as citizens in helping to make sure public education survives and thrives. But those students - and the entire MSU community - should be interested in the affairs of local school districts.

Costly choices

Motorcycle riders should be allowed to choose whether they want to wear a helmet or not. But they can only get that choice if they are willing to accept all the costs that could come as a result. For years, Michigan motorcycle riders in the state have asked the Legislature to repeal of the state’s helmet law, citing the effectiveness of helmets, the number of other states that do not have mandatory helmet laws, and the number of actual motorcycle-related deaths and their causes.
