Jackson to visit campus

The Rev. Jesse Jackson is expected to speak on campus Sept. 15, MSU undergraduate student government officials said Thursday. ASMSU has been working for four months to bring the civil rights activist and former presidential candidate to MSU, said Louis Brown, the ASMSU Student Assembly vice-chairperson.

Young skaters on display in Lansing

The North American Hockey League, a major producer of future college-hockey talent, will send all of its 11 teams to Lansing this weekend for the second annual Face-Off at The Summit, 9410 Davis Hwy in Dimondale. The Capital Centre Pride, Lansing’s Junior A hockey team, will host the event and will play at 7:30 p.m.

State study shows rise in smog

A Michigan environmental group released data that shows smog levels in the state have worsened over the past two years.Megan Owens, spokeswoman for the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan, said there is a proposal to change a portion of the Clean Air Act - but not for the better.“Changing a section of the Clean Air Act would make it easier to pollute,” Owens said.

WEB ONLY: Water bottles allowed into Spartan Stadium

Officials announced Tuesday that new, sealed, plastic water bottles now will be permitted into Spartan Stadium.MSU assistant athletics director John Lewandowski said the decision was made based on health concerns.“Everyone knows themselves best in the amount of water they need to hydrate their bodies on a day where it’ll be up in the mid- to-high 80’s,” Lewandowski said.

Donors give record $211.6 million

University officials agree that the $211.6 million in total gifts to MSU during the 2001-02 school year, including a whopping $49 million gift from the Kellogg Co., is “g-r-r-reat!” This is the seventh straight year MSU has set a record for fund raising - breaking the record of $202 million during the 2000-01 school year. MSU was also ranked 10th for public institutions receiving the most donations for the 2001 fiscal year. “The university has real momentum and a broad range of activities,” MSU President M.

Guns have no place on airplanes - in the cabin or the cockpit - despite the Bush administration’s plan to test run a program that will arm America’s commercial pilots. Sources close to the White House told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the administration’s plan will be announced soon and Congressman John Mica, R-Fla., said that Bush said he will work with Capitol Hill to arm pilots.
