MSU students, athletes and members of the community will compete alongside each other at the second annual Spartan Classic Track Meet on Tuesday at the new Ralph Young Field. MSU men’s soccer improved to 4-1 during the weekend, as the Spartans blanked Hartford 3-0 in the opening game of the UMass Soccer Classic, then defeated UMass 3-0 Sunday afternoon to clinch the tournament.Senior goalkeeper Tyler Robinson continued his impressive season, making 13 saves in the victory over Hartford and five against UMass.

I was privileged to earn a degree from MSU in 1986. I thoroughly enjoyed my college experience, which included attending as many sporting events as possible. My family continues to be ardent fans and supporters of MSU athletics today. After watching the MSU football team lose to California on Saturday, I must say that I was disappointed in its performance.

U.S. News & World Report ranks MSU No. 31 among public universities offering doctoral degrees in its America’s Best Colleges.But that spot is down three notches from the 2002 rankings.MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said that is because the report uses the same criteria and standards for everyone, while MSU officials judge the school’s success based on its mission.“What we’ve been saying all along is it’s the group you’re in, not the decimal point,” Denbow said.
