Parade provides fun despite cold weather

“Guys, we’re gonna get candy!” Lyman Briggs freshman Shelby Newman shouted to her friends as they patiently waited at their spot on Grand River Avenue for the Homecoming parade to start Friday night.Newman and her friends are freshmen, and they know all the words to the MSU’s fight song - and they made sure other spectators knew that by proudly belting it out and clapping as they waited to hear the Spartan Marching Band’s version.With more than just a hint of fall in the air, families, alumni, students and MSU fans lined the streets as the more than 120 units supporting everything from political candidates to role playing groups marched along the parade route.There also was an appearance from the green-skirted mascot, Sparty.

On a fall weekend in 1970, Dick Posthumus was driving north on U.S.-27 from MSU to Mount Pleasant, when the 20-year-old public affairs management junior noticed another student on the side of the road. Posthumus, on his way to a campaign event for John Engler, then a recent MSU graduate who was running for state representative, pulled over without hesitation.

Football head coach Bobby Williams must go. Being an effective recruiter - which he is - does not translate into being an effective head coach - which he is not. Williams has had plenty of time to reveal his effectiveness and has failed miserably. This was the year to take the program to the next level.

SPORTS UPDATE: Icers redeem themselves with victory over Northern

Marquette - Senior defenseman Brad Fast carried the MSU hockey team to a 3-1 win over Northern Michigan at the Berry Events Center on Saturday.Fast scored MSU’s first two goals, including the game-winner with 8.3 seconds left in the third period.Sophomore goaltender Matt Migliaccio was solid in making 17 saves on 18 shots for MSU (2-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 CCHA) .But Fast, the team’s captain, proved to be MSU’s hero Saturday.

SPORTS UPDATE: Gridders losing ways continue

The Spartans’ gridiron woes continued Saturday. MSU (3-4 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) was plagued by crucial penalties and allowed Minnesota (7-1, 3-1) 543 yards of total offense and 390 rushing yards in the 28-7 loss. It was the Spartans’ third defeat in their last four games and second straight in conference play. “We’re not a good football team right now,” MSU head coach Bobby Williams said.

Study finds state schools pricey

Michigan is not making the grade when it comes to affordability at its public colleges and universities, a report issued by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education says.In “Measuring Up 2002,” Michigan received an affordability rating of “D-plus” for 2002, down from a “C” grade two years ago.

Planners halt rezoning effort in Meridian Twp.

The Meridian Township Planning Commission voted Monday to recommend the denial of the Eyde Company’s request to rezone 110 acres of township land. East Lansing-based Eyde requested to rezone a parcel of land between Cornell and Powell roads to become single-family subdivisions of varying densities. The planning commission turned down the request citing a traffic increase on Powell Road and environmental concerns. “Planning law in Michigan requires the commission to take a big-picture approach to determining the best land use for a specific parcel for the long term,” Mark Kieselbach, Meridian Township director of community planning and development, said in a statement. Eyde already has been approved to develop the land as rural residential, but was seeking approval to rezone the property to allow for more homes. The land slated for development - known as the Georgetown housing development - will face further scrutiny by the Meridian Township Planning Commission when the commission meets Dec.
