More College-bound high school seniors are applying to MSU early so they can receive their response and avoid the “maybe” answer wait lists supply.Jim Cotter, senior associate director of admissions at MSU, said the process of applying to college has been displaced.“We expect to reach record applicants, but not by 3,000,” he said.

Downtown to be home to a symbol of beauty

East Lansing residents got a glance at some possible sculptures for downtown on Tuesday evening, and will have a voice in which sculpture is picked.One of three sculptures will adorn a downtown fountain in the alley Campus Town Mall.A five-member art selection panel recommended three sculptors from a roster of more than 100 to make small-scale models of their designs for the fountain.The models were introduced at East Lansing City Hall on Tuesday evening.Michael Sundermann, chairman of the city’s arts commission, said the selection process is unique because public comment will be considered in the decision.“What the people think is important,” he said.

Organizations to help society kick off program

When her roommate found a lump in her breast last October, special education junior Jeanette Lantzy knew she wanted to do something to help out.“It was a scare for all of us,” Lantzy said.Although her friend’s lump turned out to be benign, the reality of breast cancer motivated Lantzy and a group of friends to team up with about 30 campus organizations to participate in Tell a Friend, Save a Life, a campaign associated with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.Breast cancer can appear in college-aged women, but the Tell a Friend, Save a Life campaign will focus on women over the age of 40, when most women are at risk.

All American Pita, 553 E. Mens tennis finishes with six doubles wins

The Spartans finished the Minnesota Invitational this weekend with six doubles wins. Two doubles teams, seniors Adam Hourani and Jimmy McGuire, and sophomore Anthony Stefani and freshman Mike Brown, each collected two victories in the tournament on Sunday. The Spartans will travel next to Madison, Wis., after 10 days of rest to compete in the Omni Hotels Region IV Tournament.

Free salsa lessons get clubs name out

Brandy Muscato watched intently as the two salsa dance teachers spun each other around. Although she had never practiced salsa dancing before, Muscato and her roommate, no-preference freshman Libby Hingst, partnered up and tried to mimic the teachers’ moves while spinning and laughing.

It’s frustrating to watch the Spartan football program continue to crumble when the simple remedy is to call for the “coach’s head.” The question can be made why the athletics director would equate this lack of performance to his own first two years as a coach and term the program as in a “rebuilding” stage.

Hayride takes U on historical campus tour

East Lansing resident Pauline Gaseller situated her 3-year-old son’s ski cap as he peered over the green bar of the hay wagon to see the Red Cedar River. Small pieces of hay flew up as a tractor halted to a stop at a red light on Farm Lane on Monday. Gaseller and her son Takudzwa were among students and East Lansing residents who came out to learn about MSU’s history while enjoying free donuts, cider and the fall night air. “I really enjoyed it,” Gaseller, who came from Zimbabwe three months ago to join her husband, who studies at MSU.
