Midday update: Al Gore to visit campus, promote candidates

Former Vice President Al Gore’s spokesman Jano Cabrera confirmed Wednesday that the 2000 presidential candidate plans to appear at the Democratic Victory 2002 rally Monday at MSU.Gore’s visit will serve as a campaign stop for leading state Democrats, including Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, who is the party’s nominee for governor.

U shouldnt settle for mediocrity

As a recent graduate who has moved out of Michigan, I frequently look for ways to check up on the happenings at MSU. Well, fortunately for me, one of the ways to do this and see the greatness of my old school is to watch Spartan football on national television.

Students active in IM sports

Seventy-five thousand screaming fans and national TV coverage are not needed for an exciting, competitive football game to take place.According to avid residence hall sports fans, all that’s needed are floor mates or fraternity brothers, color coordinated T-shirts and $35 to sign up for one of the most popular sports in the dorms - IM football.“I love it,” communications junior and IM assistant supervisor Andi Osters said.

Friends remember floormate

Chelsea McCavit wiped tears from her eyes Tuesday night, remembering the last time she saw her roommate and best friend. Clare McCormick, a 19-year-old elementary education and child development sophomore from Alpena, was hit by a car walking on Chandler Road early Saturday morning.

Sitting at a brown rectangular table in a confined conference room in Breslin Center on Sunday, Matt Laskowski enjoys what’s left of a limited smorgasbord of nachos, fried rice and taco salad. And after only about three minutes, his radio crackles and his facial expression turns from content to somewhat annoyed, but not surprised. “I’ve never once worked an event that, as soon as I sit down to eat, I don’t get called,” he says.

Time for equality

Lansing Community College has jumped aboard the train to the 21st century by stopping discrimination based on sexual orientation and is extending employee benefits to same-sex partners. The LCC Board of Trustees approved the measure at Monday night’s meeting.

Fee-d up

University officials are considering charging students living in residence halls an Ethernet-access fee in addition to room and board rates beginning in the 2003-04 academic year. Such a measure would be a cheap way of passing the buck to students. David Gist, MSU’s vice provost for libraries, computing and technology, said Housing & Food Services will have to propose the fee in April to the MSU Board of Trustees as a part of the housing-rates budget before it approves the university’s 2003-04 budget because on-campus Internet traffic is exponentially rising.

Midday update: ASMSU wants U off party school list

ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, wants administrators to work on changing MSU’s “party school” image.MSU appeared on the Princeton Review’s and Playboy magazine’s 2003 top party school lists.ASMSU Student Assembly Chairperson Matt Weingarden said when MSU’s categorized as a party school, prospective students are more likely to choose a different school to attend.

Columnist assumed too much about crowd

Kudos to Craig Gunn for his address on the decline of American civilization, particularly in the way our current generation behaves (“Education goes beyond books, class; teach your kids” SN 10/22). He was correct in stating that many American youths today are not so much inclined to the reality of world issues as they are to events that surround their own daily lives.

Womens club sports vie for varsity status

Every club team at MSU hopes it will someday be called up to varsity. And why wouldn’t they? Varsity teams are supported with millions of university dollars; club teams scratch by on pocket money and friendly donations.

College of Education awarded 2 grants

The MSU College of Education will be part of two grants worth about $20 million awarded by the National Science Foundation to improve education. MSU is the only university to be part of both grants at the K-12 and post-secondary level. The grant, awarded for the study of Higher Adult and Lifelong Education, is worth $10 million over five years and will launch a relationship with the University of Wisconsin and Penn State University to establish the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning. “Starting from day one for this to be a success it will go way beyond Wisconsin,” said James Fairweather, MSU educational administration professor.

An MSU employee received an obscene phone call from an unknown man stating he was coming after her last week.Police say a 34-year-old woman received four obscene phone calls in her Administration Building office between 8 a.m.
