Our résumé shows humans don't have ultimate control

And the lord god created both men and women to inherit the Earth. He then saw what he had made, and he knew there was going to be trouble. Every creation story I've encountered, including the two accounts told in the Bible, depicts humans as the pinnacle invention in the metamorphosis of order from chaos. And why shouldn't we be? After all, we have subdued the Earth with our agricultural prowess and conquered the seas and skies with ships and planes.

Attorney Justin Kuxhaus paced back and forth in his plaid shirt and blue jeans, making his argument in front of a judge wearing a skull cap and hooded sweatshirt. Observers in the courtroom listened to the case while doing their homework and playing cards. Twice a week, two teams of students gather to assume the roles of lawyers, a judge and witnesses as part of MSU's Mock Trial team. The group next competes Feb.

Stampede brings calf roping, bull riding, barrel racing to 'U'

Mention of MSU's Rodeo Club could have those not in the know envisioning members as bull riders performing death-defying stunts to rowdy crowds. And that scene might be a reality to some club members. But interdisciplinary studies in social science junior Jennifer Hill says seasoned riders aren't the only participants of the group. "We have people from all levels - people who have competed and know a lot about horses and rodeos to people who don't know that much but are interested in learning and finding out about it," she said. The 50-member club is hosting this weekend's Spartan Stampede at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. The event will feature seven categories, including calf roping, bull riding and barrel racing competitions.

Space center visitors praise astronauts legacy

Jackson - As President Bush memorialized the seven crew members who died onboard the space shuttle Columbia, the Michigan Space & Science Center remained relatively quiet Tuesday afternoon. The president's words resonated with East Lansing residents Margaret and Paul Roney, who watched a live feed of the memorial service on the center's AstroTheater. For Paul Roney, watching the news coverage of the failed re-entry Saturday morning rehashed somber memories of the Sept.

Stats don't define Pagel's impact

Relaxing in a chair in the basement of Breslin Center after her team's 73-56 waxing of Michigan on Thursday, MSU junior forward Julie Pagel is all smiles.During the game, Pagel assumed an entirely different persona as she stepped out onto the court with a scowl on her face and prepared to do battle with the rival Wolverines.Hauling in a game-and season-high 12 rebounds and tallying three steals during the game, Pagel was the epitome of the blue-collar Spartan defense head coach Joanne P.

Reality TV offers break from reality

After reading Jessica Nowak's recent indictment of her friend's inclination to watch "The Real World" as opposed to President Bush's State of the Union address ("Instead of watching 'Real World,' read a newspaper, get informed," SN 2/3), I can only extend my most cordial sympathies to her dear friend, who deserved not a word of public criticism. Nowak's controversial stance on current affairs (being informed is good) is rational, but I don't think that watching a dull speech populated with patriotic clichés and methodical applause necessarily makes one any more informed than one already is.
