As the nation braces for war, about 40 MSU students are using class time to better understand how violence, conflict and social issues are intertwined with peace and justice. Three years ago, when professors began preparations for the Peace and Justice Studies specialization, they aimed to create a collection of courses where students could learn to better gauge the connection between international hostilities and tranquility. Now in its second year, student interest in the specialization increased significantly as the climate of foreign affairs has shifted, said Richard Peterson, co-director of the specialization. "The focus of the specialization is a fruitful way to learn about the world," said Peterson, a philosophy professor.

The quickest way to strip myself of whatever hubris I accrue is simply to enter a bookstore. I've concluded Schuler's is nothing more than a warehouse designed to demonstrate to me that even if I spent every moment of my life reading, I would die knowing a tiny portion of the measure of human knowledge.

Matt Treadwell's column on the proposed President Bush/Saddam Hussein debate is entirely absurd for several reasons ("Bush should accept Saddam's debate offer - unless he's yella," SN 2/26). It would be much easier for Saddam to win the debate because he isn't constrained by having to tell anything remotely close to the truth.

When Angie Dickinson walked into Totally Takeout on Wednesday afternoon, instinct took over.
