Teach-in to address U-M admissions policy

MSU history Professor Pero Dagbovie will lead an affirmative action teach-in at 8 p.m. today in Wonders Hall Kiva. The event, sponsored by the Council of Racial Ethnic Students, is designed to educate people about the University of Michigan's admissions policy, which awards prospective students points for their academic history, race, location, family's connection with the university and a variety of other factors. "We really are looking for people to go who don't know about affirmative action," said journalism sophomore Shanita Baxter, a racial ethnic student aide.

Izzo slim on coaches following departures

With the defections of assistant coach Mike Garland (Cleveland State) and associate head coach Brian Gregory (Dayton) for head-coaching jobs, MSU head coach Tom Izzo is in search of two replacements.Izzo said his challenge will be to replace two monumental parts of his staff and two close friends."Those two guys are 66 percent of my staff," he said.

McPherson, Bush administration talk about Iraq's reconstruction

From Staff Reports The State News MSU President M. Peter McPherson is in Washington today to discuss the financial reconstruction of Iraq with the Bush administration, university spokesman Terry Denbow said. This morning, McPherson told Peter Magrath, president of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, he plans to leave MSU for at least two months to take part in the rebuilding of Iraq. Provost Lou Anna Simon will act as MSU's interim president during McPherson's absence.

Sluggers fall to Western Michigan, 4-2

Michigan's weather and the MSU baseball team's bats had something in common Wednesday evening - both suffered a serious drop off. A day after lighting up the scoreboard with 13 runs against Wayne State, the Spartans' offense was tamed by Western Michigan in a 4-2 loss. "It was a tough day to hit today," MSU manager Ted Mahan said.

SMITH: Stupid concertgoers too often ruin experience for music lovers

What's your biggest pet peeve? Seriously, think about it. Although I have a bunch (and could probably name each one off in alphabetical order), I really only have one real musically related one - people who don't attend a concert for the music. If you haven't experienced the annoyance, consider yourself extremely lucky. More than ever, it seems people just can't seem to shut up when the lights go down and the band begins to play.

An explosive first inning was all the MSU softball team needed to down Central Michigan 4-0 on Wednesday at Old College Field.The Spartans (27-11 overall, 6-3 Big Ten) lit up Chippewa pitcher Amber Puchalski for four hits in their first at-bats.MSU also benefited from a wild pitch and aggressive base running to jump to a quick four-run lead."The first inning really set the tone for us," MSU sophomore second base Janette Hurtado said.

East Lansing voters can eliminate primary elections for City Council races on November's ballot, which would allow returning students greater impact on local politics.City Council unanimously supported Tuesday to let residents vote to eliminate the primary.

Let me start by helping The State News decide if the "Your Voice" thing is for "us" or not ("Graduates do not represent 'voice'" SN 4/16). Who is "us?" I didn't realize once you left MSU you were no longer affiliated with the university.
