Patriot Act spurs concern

The East Lansing City Council plans to discuss a resolution submitted by concerned residents condemning the USA Patriot Act as an infringement of their civil rights. Residents opposing the Patriot Act are expected to address the council during the public comment portion of today's 7 p.m.

Olin series to inform women on importance of staying healthy

Olin Health Center is coordinating a month-long series of events to address women's healthy sexuality during February. It's the second women's healthy sexuality month at MSU, and was developed by Olin health educators to inform MSU women about the importance of gynecological exams and keeping their bodies healthy physically as well as sexually. "There were some needs in the area of women's sexuality, such as pap smears," Olin Health Center health educator Dennis Martell said.

President to give State of 'U'

MSU President M. Peter McPherson will offer ideas about how to help students graduate sooner and to raise MSU's academic standards at his State of the University address today. McPherson's speech, "New Opportunities for New Realities," begins at 3 p.m.

MLK day dinner not offensive to all

I agree with University Housing and Food Services Coordinator Bruce Haskell when he said, "What may be stereotypical to one person may be a wonderful representation of their culture to another" ("MLK dinner spurs controversy in Owen Hall" SN 2/6). I'm a white boy from the South, and I wish someone would have told me Owen Hall was serving catfish and okra.

City balances licenses, safety

Dave Milligan said he couldn't imagine his restaurant without some beer on the menu. For the Crunchy's owner, a liquor license is just as integral to business as his burger-yielding kitchen. "Liquor makes up almost half of our revenue," Milligan said. Milligan owns one of the 31 liquor licenses distributed to East Lansing by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

Dems seek to resolve vote issues

Days after the 2004 Michigan Democratic caucus, party executives still are trying to smooth over relations with several groups who feel the needs of Detroit voters were not met in Saturday's decision. The controversy began when six of the 14th congressional district's 81 sites were closed Saturday, leaving voters wondering where they could cast their votes.

Minority apps fall at U-M

Less than one year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the University of Michigan's use of race in its undergraduate admissions process, the school has reported a decline in applications from minorities. According to information released Monday by U-M, the number of applications received from blacks, Chicanos, Latinos and American Indians is down by 23 percent. But university officials said the findings are still preliminary because there are thousands of applications left to review, with more arriving daily, despite the Feb.

Single local temple home to faithful

When Payel Gupta was a little girl, she prayed with local members of the Hindu community in their houses. There was no temple in the Lansing area until 1992, so Gupta's friends and family would gather together in local homes to worship. Now, when she attends the Bharatiya Temple of Lansing in Haslett, it is a symbol to her of how far they've come.

Spartans tie record with national ranking

The No. 17 MSU women's basketball team tied the school record for the highest ranking in the program's history on Monday afternoon. The last and only time the Spartans (18-4 overall, 8-3 Big Ten) were ranked this high was March 16, 1977.

MIDDAY UPDATE: McPherson speaks on budget cuts, state tuition deal

MSU President M. Peter McPherson offered some of his thoughts about how to help raise MSU's academic standards during the budget crisis at his State of the University Address Tuesday.In his speech, "New Opportunities for New Realities," McPherson began by thanking the crowd of more than 200 students, faculty and administrators for their help during the past few budget-crunching months."The budget reductions have been driven from within the university, not just from the Administration Building," McPherson said during the speech.McPherson also spoke briefly on several topics that have recently gained public concern, such as the university's acceptance of Gov.

$3M project up for vote

The MSU Board of Trustees will vote on several university building renovations Friday, including a $3 million addition to the Cyclotron structure. If the contract for the renovation is passed, construction for the 13,000 square-foot addition will begin shortly after the board meeting, said University Engineer Bob Nestle.
