Affirmative action ruling faces appeal

The state Attorney General's office filed an appeal Tuesday in response to an Ingham County Circuit Court ruling that a state board shouldn't have approved petition forms aiming to end racial- and gender-preference practices in Michigan. Attorney General Mike Cox said in a written statement that the appeal is necessary to remain consistent with established Michigan law and to protect the public's petitioning rights. "The lower court's standard for amending the constitution creates too onerous a burden on those who choose to engage in democratic action," he said.

Greedy student deserves jail time

I am writing this letter in response to the story "Student accused of fraud" (SN 3/29). It is a shame that Denita Dorsey was so greedy that she would stoop to the level of stealing the identities of others so that she could purchase luxuries for herself, including a $40,000 vehicle.

Nausea, pure disgust, utter fascination? No one word can truly describe the mad rush of emotions I experienced after a bit of Monday night channel-surfing that led me to MTV's latest addition to the reality TV pool, "I Want A Famous Face." The new series tracks self-loathing wannabes going under the knife to get Brad Pitt's nose and Britney Spears' breasts or getting liposuction and slicing off skin to get Kate Winslet's body.

Inconsistency hurt Spartans through year

The MSU hockey team's season-long struggles with offensive production and maintaining consistency hurt the Spartans when it mattered most - the NCAA Tournament. MSU finished the season with two losses to stand at 23-17-2, but in those two losses, only one goal was scored and only two players tallied points. "It's such a blessing in today's game to score," head coach Rick Comley said after Saturday's loss to Minnesota-Duluth.
