ASMSU chooses leaders

Three new chairs for ASMSU's Academic Assembly took office Tuesday night, each pledging to fill the assembly's seats, address the provost's plan for liberal arts restructuring and go into the streets to connect with MSU students. Dan Weber defeated College of Natural Science representative Andy McCoy for assembly chairperson. Weber, a physiology senior who was external vice chair this session, said chairs need to encourage representatives to be excited about the power they have in academic governance. "In other years, it was like we were up in a tower," Weber said.

Groups plan protest of Rice appearance

Several activist groups are planning to protest National Security Adviser and MSU commencement speaker Condoleezza Rice, possibly by creating an alternative graduation ceremony open to all students. "I want to be able to go to something I choose," said physiology senior Neil Sardana, a member of Direct Action, Students for Peace and Justice and Students for Economic Justice.

On edge

Finals week for many students is synonymous with pulling all-nighters, cramming, consuming caffeine - and stressing out. "A lot of unhealthy practices," Olin Health Center health educator Dennis Martell said.

Center deals with building problems

Editor's note: This is the first in a three-part series highlighting effects of the forecasted state revenue-sharing cuts, which impact the East Lansing city budget. Atop the gravelly, bi-level roof of the Bailey Community Center, numerous tufts of green moss grow without restriction. It is a section of the roof built below the roof's main level that rarely sees the sun and has suffered for it with a segment that no longer stops the rain. During a strong storm or winter thaw, the building's corridors are lined with buckets to catch the water dripping from the ceiling.

Safety first

You know teenagers today. They're crazy. Much crazier than when we were all teenagers. They try to find ways to stay out past curfew, snag their first beer or first drug and then try to top it all off with a clumsy first venture into having sex. Those crazy, rotten teenagers.

Early risers

What's the difference between Walter Sobchak, a fictional character from the Coen brothers' 1998 film "The Big Lebowski," and Duke University? In the film, Walter knew "life does not start and stop at your convenience." When his fictional friend Donny irked him enough, Walter loudly would remind Donny of exactly that.

Reflection

On April 15, The State News ran an editorial titled "Relax, Eco," in which we told MSU's student environmental group to be happy that the Simon Power Plant was converting to natural gas. The group campaigned last year to get the university to consider renewable energy options, and in our editorial Thursday, we told its members to stop complaining and to see the upside of the situation.

Vegan off-base; dairy products safe

I feel 100 percent safe in consuming dairy products because I have chosen to educate myself about milk production - that is why I became so alarmed when I read Sonia Khaleel's "Being vegan enjoyable, humane, delicious, thank you very much". I would like the opportunity to respond to the overexaggerated comments made about the dairy industry by presenting The State News' readers with some facts.
