Relax, Eco

With the Board of Trustees' proposal to spend $30 million on expanding the power plant, campus group Eco needs to get a grip. Eco is upset because the university has decided to convert from coal usage to natural gas, instead of converting to a renewable energy.

Editorials amusing, well-done this year

Usually, when I've written The State News, it is to disagree with an official editorial or to poke barbs at Andrew Goetz, the scholarly grand pooba of the MSU Democrats, but I find myself shockingly compelled to write in praise of the current editorial staff. They have produced some fine literature with this paper's praise of the debate team's representation of "this little public cow college that could" and how it stuck it to the preppy kids. The State News' opinion on National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice's impending visit was fair and funny, and the analysis that "this arguably is the most important speaker since the day Slick Willy wore a graduation robe here and probably creeped out some co-eds" is just damn good writing. MSU's Pride Week kicks off Friday with a series of events to celebrate and educate the campus community about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identities. "We take time to recognize LGBT identities and the courage it takes to be out in a society that still is ridiculously homophobic," said Jon Hoadley, a social relations and women's studies junior.

Rice for 'U'

There are a lot of people on this campus who dislike Condoleezza Rice for her politics. There are plenty of people who disagree with her reluctance to testify these past few weeks and probably even more who just dislike her for the cold-blooded, pit bull stare.

Group voices discontent about power -plant expansion

Students, faculty and energy specialists gathered Tuesday night to discuss alternatives to a recent MSU Board of Trustees proposal to enlarge the campus power plant with a $30 million expansion. Members of Eco, a student environmental group, organized the panel discussion after expressing discontent with not being consulted about the board's decision. "We're just trying to find the best choices for the MSU campus and get those ideas out there," said Amy Gregory, a general science education senior and Eco coordinator. Yvonne Wood, a zoology sophomore and Eco member, said she thought the board rushed its decision. "It seemed like they wanted to vote on it and get it over with so no one could give them a hard time about it," she said. At its last meeting of the fall semester, the MSU Board of Trustees passed a proposal to spend $30 million on renovations to the Simon Power Plant. Much of the money would be spent to convert coal power to natural gas, which is more expensive but cleaner, said Bob Ellerhorst, a panel speaker and the director of utilities and waste management at MSU.
