E.L. group discusses Cedar Village plan

The East Village Master Planning Team will update the planning commission on its progress for the revamping of the Cedar Village area during a meeting tonight at City Hall. In old business, the council will discuss a revised application from Corey Partnership to demolish the building at 601-603 E.

Two-day program to discuss women's issues

The Women's Resource Center is presenting four programs Wednesday and Thursday to help students, faculty and staff deal with common issues for women. The issues addressed this week range from perfectionism to the importance of sleep. Among the topics addressed at the program, "Long Distance Loves, Long Distance Lives: The Ups & Downs of Long Distance Relationships," is how to maintain a healthy balance between a significant other and an active social life at home. "There is definitely a mental health angle here, and a healthy relationship angle - people shouldn't be caught up in waiting for the phone to ring," said Jodi Hancock, education program coordinator of the Women's Resource Center.

'U' housing should void out contracts

I write to offer my opinion on the overcrowding in the dorms. This past spring, members of the spring recruitment class for Sigma Alpha Epsilon had asked the university to get out of their dorm contracts for the Fall 2004 academic school year.

Former ASMSU member joins E.L. planning board

A fresh, young voice will now have input on East Lansing's planning decisions. City Council members approved the appointment of Lynsey Little, former ASMSU director of community affairs, to the planning commission during Tuesday night's meeting at the Union. Little, a recent MSU graduate and East Lansing native, majored in interdisciplinary studies in social science and urban and regional planning. "It's a commission that, ever since I became a planning student, I wanted to be a part of," said Little, 23.

Meeting addresses arts college

A new residential college was the main topic of a special Academic Council meeting Tuesday. Marcellette Williams, chairwoman of the New Residential College Program Planning Group, presented the committee's draft report for a new liberal arts and sciences college. Williams said the committee identified several issues faculty and students brought up in the various meetings it held.

Trustees look at tailgating rule change

As Spartans fans loudly tailgated before the Notre Dame football game on Saturday, playing different drinking games and grilling up some grub, most probably weren't aware that they were being watched. Some members of the MSU Board of Trustees, dressed casually, were perusing the Wilson tennis courts and taking mental notes on the activities.

Safe swordsmanship taught at club

For MSU Kendo Club Sensei Ron Fox, a normal Sunday consists of cracking his students over the head with a bamboo stick, darting back to avoid being struck and dashing forward to strike his opponent on the wrist. As an instructor of the Japanese form of fencing, Fox views the sport as more cerebral than physical. "It's not just about hitting," Fox said.

On a Friday night in a neighborhood off Abbott Road, an elderly woman settles in for another weekend amongst college students. With her television on, a game of solitaire in progress and her cats, Princess and Butch, beside her, she stays up late entertaining herself while the students outside partake in weekend partying. Her home is cozy and well kept.

The Michigan Professional Golfers' Association will move its Livonia headquarters to a new 5,000 square-foot building on the grounds of Eagle Eye Golf Club at Hawk Hollow in East Lansing. "We're going to begin construction this October, and hopefully have it up in the spring," said Ken Devine, current Michigan PGA CEO. "Eagle Eye is one of the premier golf clubs in the state and can hold all our section meetings, and the golf course is capable of hosting major PGA events," Devine said. Eagle Eye, located at 15500 Chandler Road, will provide a 66,000 square-foot clubhouse facility for events and tournaments.

Roger Crane stood atop a wooden bridge at the edge of his cornfield, squinting into the mid-afternoon sun. The wind whipped around him, lifting his white hair and puffing out his shirt, drowning out his soft-spoken voice with every blustering gust. He faced his cornfield, 5 acres of which had been carved into a maze.

Work on new Brody dorm begins with builder appointment

At its first meeting of the new school year, the MSU Board of Trustees appointed a construction manager to begin planning for the addition of a seventh residence hall in the Brody Complex. The hall will be the first new dorm built on campus since the opening of Holden Hall in 1967, and will include apartment-style rooms and space for 300 students.
