Michigan student reps oppose military draft

Student government leaders at MSU and Michigan's other 14 public universities hope they sent a strong, unified message to lawmakers Sunday: no military draft. The bill to oppose military draft or a selective service act affecting students was passed unanimously by the Association of Michigan Universities, or AMU, this weekend at its quarter-yearly conference, which was held at MSU this year.

Stanton emerges as Spartans' starting QB, but how long will he last?

So I'm sitting here watching Donovan McNabb make the Lions defensive line look stupid, and I'm thinking, "Wow, what a luxury to have a quarterback who can throw and run." There's even more proof on Detroit's next possession when Joey Harrington is scrambling from the Philadelphia defense and the ball just pops out of his hand - fumble-roosky. Two quick notes: I know I'm not the first person to bring this concept to light, and I'm not bashing Harrington, but he shouldn't be running with the ball-throw it away, Joey! Where's the relevance in all this, you ask?

MIDDAY UPDATE: Filmmaker Moore to speak to 'U', Dems confirm

Michael Moore will give a free speech at noon Thursday at the Auditorium. After ASMSU, MSU's undergraduate student government, tried and failed to bring the controversial documentary filmmaker to campus, the MSU College Democrats stepped in and secured the engagement. "The timing is just too perfect with the deadline for voter registration right around the corner," MSU College Democrats spokesman Stephen Purchase said.

Stanton leads Spartans in 2nd-half comeback win

Bloomington, Ind. - After amassing only 103 yards of total offense, scoring only seven points and facing a 20-7 halftime deficit, MSU needed to turn things around. In the first start of his career, sophomore quarterback Drew Stanton led MSU (2-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) back into the game - using his feet - and to a 30-20 victory over Indiana in the Big Ten conference opener.

McPherson will offer reflections in final address

During his final State of the University address on Tuesday, MSU President M. Peter McPherson will reflect on his 11 years at the university's helm and declare his hopes for MSU's future. "Many more of these addresses were really annual reports more than visions," MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said.

Potential tailgate

In response to the proposed ideas on tailgate regulation ("Officials discuss tailgate regulation" SN 9/23), I have to say that some of the ideas presented were needed long ago to help many of the problems with the Wilson tennis courts tailgate area. I have worked football parking for the MSU Athletics Department's Ralph Young Fund for three football seasons at donor Lot G across from the tennis court area and I've seen much of what happens.

State News staff predicts Big Ten conference final football standings

In a mediocre year for the conference, the Boilermakers' passing game, the Wolverines' defense and Minnesota's favorable schedule and running game will lead them all to share the conference crown. MSU will find itself back near the bottom without a proven leader on the field. T1. Purdue T1. Minnesota T1. Michigan 4. Ohio State 5. Wisconsin 6. Iowa T7. MSU T7. Indiana 9. Penn State 10. Northwestern 11. Illinois Jonathan Malavolti The Big Ten is up for grabs, but I am going to go out on a limb and pick Wisconsin to win the Big Ten title with defense.

Hoosiers experience, talent leads to wins

Playing, practicing and preparing in a state known as "the crossroads of America" seems especially appropriate for Indiana this season. Boasting an improbable 2-1 record, the Hoosiers' football program is at its own crossroads.

Security problems keep Moore from 'U'

Efforts to bring Michael Moore to campus fell through on Thursday because ASMSU was unable to garner security for the event. MSU's undergraduate student government cited problems with the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety as the main reason they were unable to secure Moore. "Basically it wasn't given enough time," said Kristen Daddow, Student Assembly vice chairperson of student programming.

Corey Partnership developers said they "burned the midnight oil" last week, adjusting their vision for the corner of Bailey Street and Grand River Avenue to comply with city and neighborhood requests. Their work paid off Wednesday night when the East Lansing Planning Commission, which previously voted against the development, recommended its approval, 7-2. The issue will go before city council on Oct.
