Dancing concludes Japan Week

An intense, straight-faced stare and flowing, yet restrained body movements accompanied Elizabeth Dowd as she chanted Japanese poetry and danced the medieval art form of Noh. Noh, a Japanese art dating back to the 14th century, is revered the same way opera is revered in the Western World, Dowd explained.

Made up in feathered hats, white wigs and hoop skirts, the Elizabethan-transformed cast of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" will embody the characteristics of classic Britain, but with a modern twist on Thursday. "The exotic qualities of (Caribbean) music and culture is something everyone is familiar with, and it's modern," Director Mary Job said.

Club members play beat the clock on racetrack

Secured with a helmet and seat belt, Elliot Tippmann spun around the corner in his sliver Ford Focus at 50 mph, inches away from hitting a traffic cone and gaining a two-second penalty. Tippmann, a mechanical engineering sophomore and member of the MSU Racing Club, along with three other club members competed against about 100 racers in the Saginaw Valley Region Sports Car Club of America's last race in Midland on Sunday. On a course about a mile long, racers maneuvered their way around cones and sharp turns, hoping for a winning time. "The idea is to drive through as fast as you can without hitting a cone," said course designer Raleigh Boreen.

College Dems, GOP forgot about Nader

The debate between MSU College Democrats and Republicans is a good representation of exactly what is wrong with the real debates between presidential candidates. The lack of a voice beyond those of the duopoly will result in many important issues not being addressed. The exclusion of a representative for Ralph Nader expresses the organizations' desire to limit the voices voters hear, and the choices that they have on Nov.

Talks of reinstating draft spur student, local reaction

As military personnel continue to battle insurgents in Iraq, some students are becoming increasingly concerned about two Congressional bills that aim to change the national draft policy. The legislation, introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in January 2003, calls for the equal eligibility of all citizens aged 18-26 to serve in the military if a draft is implemented.

In a country that values freedom, it is hard to believe that residents of some cities - East Lansing included - cannot show their support via yard signs for a candidate prior to 30 days before the election.

Debate panelist wrong, Kerry's performance on Thursday night 'not embarrassing at all'

In regard to Andrew Sivak's comment "Panel: Candidates redundant during first square-off" (SN 10/1) about John Kerry's performance in the first presidential debate, I don't know what you were watching, but Kerry's performance was not embarrassing at all. He cleared up a lot of the conservative hype about flip-flopping by being consistent in his responses and he made some excellent points that President Bush could not handle.

Dressed in high-cut navy blue running shorts and a bright purple tank top, Ron Heames, 60, bounced in the cold, frosty Sunday morning air as he stretched in preparation for the 20th annual Michigan State University Federal Credit Union Dinosaur Dash. Heames, an Ann Arbor resident, has run the race for eight years.

Redshirt freshman steps up in game; 9 catches for 103 yards most by Spartans receiver this season

Iowa City, Iowa - Love was in the air Saturday. Terry Love, that is. The redshirt freshman caught his first career reception for 19 yards in the second quarter of MSU's 38-16 loss at Iowa on Saturday. Then he caught his second career ball on a 9-yard slant rout - good enough for another first down. His third career catch came two plays later, a 4-yard gain. After the next three plays, Love would add his fourth, fifth and sixth career catches. The only thing that could stop Love late in the second quarter was his shoe - which came off - forcing him to the sidelines. Love would add three more receptions to his not-so-long ago empty résumé in the second half, giving him nine on the day with 103 yards.

Errors amount to team's weekend split

Disappointing was an understatement for head coach Chuck Erbe after the MSU volleyball team (6-6 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) fell to Purdue on Saturday. Heartbreaking was more like it as MSU lost, 3-2. "The single most disappointing thing about this is, we should've won this match," Erbe said.
