Inconsistency trend must be broken for bowl game bid

If body language can tell a story, then MSU head coach John L. Smith sitting slumped forward on a trainer's table, head hung low and eyes fixed on the floor in Kinnick Stadium's infamous pig-pink visitors' locker room, tells the tale of the Spartans' 2004 season. Nearly halfway through his second football season Smith's sophomore slump is straggling in.

Former secretary of labor talks to students about Kerry, jobs

Robert Reich fired up a small group of John Kerry supporters outside Beaumont Tower Thursday. Reich, who served as secretary of labor under former president Bill Clinton, told about 25 people why he endorses the Democratic presidential candidate. "I have known John Kerry for 25 years, and I know he will make a terrific president," Reich said.

Paul Bremer, former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, deserves to be protested. He was a key figurehead of an unjust, or at least questionable, war.

Secondary falls from grace

MSU's pass defense was no longer a weakness. The Spartans' sturdy secondary was all over the field, knocking down passes and laying out receivers. Then, MSU played Iowa and allowed its quarterback to throw for a career-high 340 yards. Iowa quarterback Drew Tate had a heck of a day and MSU's defensive backs did little to stop it. After two straight weeks without a dark horse in the Heisman picture, one has emerged. Louisiana Tech running back Ryan Moats ran for more than 200 yards for the third time this season against Fresno State last week.

ASMSU: 'U' must tailgate sensibly

As Spartans fans gear up for Saturday's home football game against Illinois, student leaders are telling overzealous tailgaters to behave, as police and university officials will be especially perceptive of drunken antics. "I hope students demonstrate they can be responsible this weekend," said Andrew Bell, ASMSU Student Assembly external vice chairperson.

Make-A-Wish seeks help for girl with an illness

Michaela Dermyer is just like any other 3-year-old girl. She likes Disney movies, sing-along songs and hopes to one day visit Disney World. Michaela, who was born with cardiomyopathy, and her family hopes Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan will help her experience the dreamland of Disney World.

Field hockey squad to face undefeated team

After beating Central Michigan on Tuesday, the MSU field hockey team is ready to host conference opponent Penn State on Saturday. The Nittany Lions remain undefeated in the Big Ten in 2004. Spartans alumni also will be honored at the game, which begins at 4 p.m. Senior forward Veerle Goudswaard continues to carry her team to victory, scoring four goals on Tuesday, marking her third hat trick of the season, in a 8-2 win.

E-magazine seeks out young professionals

A new online magazine launched this week aims to attract more young professionals to Michigan by making the state seem more inviting, local economic officials said. The e-magazine, MiLife MiTimes (pronounced My-life My-times), was created by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, or MEDC. The e-magazine is directed toward members of the "creative class," which includes recent college graduates in creative fields entering the workforce, said Dave Lorenz, vice president of Travel Michigan and business marketing for the MEDC.

WEB ONLY: Men's soccer readies for five-game trip

The MSU men's soccer team (7-2), riding a two-game winning streak, will resume Big Ten play in Columbus, Ohio, when the Spartans face Ohio State (4-4-1). The game will be the first of a five-game road trip for the Spartans, who are coming off back-to-back shutouts of Northwestern and Loyola at Old College Field. The Buckeyes are coming off a 1-0 win over Wisconsin on Sunday.

Rape pretrial for student begins today

An MSU student accused of raping a fellow hallmate will face his alleged victim in court today. Travis Eichten, a marketing freshman, could spend up to 15 years in jail for third degree sexual assault.

White team beats Green team in first hockey contest

Senior forward Adam Nightingale had two goals and sophomore defenseman Chris Snavely had a goal and two assists to lead the MSU White team to a 4-2 win over the MSU Green team Friday night at Munn Ice Arena. "We've been working hard," senior goaltender Matt Migliaccio said.

Ranked U-M, Gophers battle for Little Brown Jug

No. 13 Minnesota vs. No. 14 Michigan It will be a battle for Big Ten supremacy at Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon when the Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-0 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) travel to Ann Arbor to battle the Michigan Wolverines (4-1, 2-0). Minnesota is coming off a 16-7 win over Penn State in which running back Laurence Maroney rushed for 144 yards on 25 carries with one touchdown.
