ASMSU votes against bill that would allow fishing in the Red Cedar River

Lindsey Bock wasn't surprised when she caught a 30-inch salmon in the Red Cedar River behind Kellogg Center and she said other students shouldn't be either. The fisheries and wildlife senior said she catches everything from rock bass to salmon in MSU's featured waterway and, as part of the Fisheries and Wildlife Club, works to make students realize the river isn't a "toxic dump." Bock is involved with cataloging fish and other species in the Red Cedar River as secretary for the club that also takes part in river cleanups.

On the main road into downtown Jackson, a large cardboard sign on the door of a red fire engine house reads, "Just Say NO to Republicans ... Vote Kerry." The station house is no longer used by the Jackson Fire Department - it's a private residence.

Bush campaigners urge youth vote as poll deadlines loom

Art Bukowski Special for The State News For more than 1,700 MSU students, the most important day of the year is here. Across the nation, Americans are making their way to the polls to select the next president, and MSU Students for Bush - a group active on campus since January - is wrapping up months of work into a final push to secure the re-election of President Bush. Meredith Phillis, an English sophomore and the group's communication director, said the members of Students for Bush are fully aware of the importance of voter turnout, which is expected to play a crucial role in this tight race. "Every vote is so important," she said.

The recent death of a Boston Red Sox fan from a pepper spray pellet shot was extremely rare, area law enforcement officers said, adding they plan to continue use of similar weapons. Med school move delayed to 2007

The MSU College of Human Medicine won't be relocated to Grand Rapids until at least 2007, and could cost only half as much as university officials originally estimated. MSU and Grand Rapids officials say they're on board with a dual-campus plan presented on Friday by Deloitte Consulting and Grand Action.

During the last few days, MSU students backing the Republican, Democratic and independent candidates for president felt the pace of their work picking up as the election drew near.

Student dies in car accident

A senior interior design student was killed in a rollover car accident Sunday just before midnight. Lara Maria Polteraitis, 21, of Livonia, didn't make a curve in the road, and she struck a utility pole, then a cement culvert before rolling over, said Clinton County Sheriff's Department Sgt.

Anti-Bush cyclists dress up, speak out

Costumed bicyclists rode through East Lansing and the capital area on Friday making noise in an attempt to get their voices heard. Members of Critical Mass, a community organization that promotes bicycles as an alternative form of transportation, dressed in Halloween costumes, and rode bikes on the streets of East Lansing with bells and signs to voice their disapproval of the Bush administration. "We just want to make our presence known," said landscape architecture senior Tim Heuer.

Women's soccer closes season with 3-0 win

The MSU women's soccer team concluded its season Saturday with a 3-0 win against Akron. Junior Erin Konheim and freshman Maureen Pawlak both scored a goal and earned an assist. Helping to give the Spartans an early lead, Konheim scored the first goal of the game from the seven yard line.

Students honor the dead

A commemoration of the dead will take place at 6 p.m. today at the rock on Farm Lane. Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is traditionally a time when families in Mexico set up alters and give offerings to symbolically celebrate their deceased family members' lives - how they lived and their accomplishments.
